The true flowers of the bougainvillea are tiny, inconspicuous tubes, white or yellow, nestled within large, colorful leaves called bracts. So, the bracts are colored. What we mistake for the "petals" of the bougainvillea (whether pink, fuchsia, orange, or white) are actually bracts. These modified, papery leaves protect the true flower. Floral beauty! Les véritables fleurs du bougainvillier sont de minuscules tubes discrets, blancs ou jaunes, nichés au cœur de grandes feuilles colorées appelées bractées. Ce sont donc les bractées qui sont colorées. Ce que l'on prend souvent pour les « pétales » du bougainvillier (qu'ils soient roses, fuchsia, orange ou blancs) est en réalité une bractée. Ces feuilles modifiées, semblables à du papier, protègent la véritable fleur. Quelle beauté florale !

This vibrant photograph captures the spectacular bracts of orange bougainvillea in full bloom. The papery, heart-shaped bracts range from deep coral-orange to soft peachy-pink, overlapping in brilliant profusion. At the center of each cluster, the true flowers emerge, tiny, tubular white blooms with delicate yellow centers, almost inconspicuous against the flamboyant bracts that surround them. The translucent quality of the bracts is beautifully evident here, with sunlight illuminating their delicate veining and creating subtle gradations of color. Green foliage peeks through in the background, providing contrast to the warm sunset hues. Named after Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811): Bougainvillea was named after the French admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, who led the first French circumnavigation of the globe (1766-1769). The plant was discovered by the expedition’s botanist, Philibert Commerçon, in Brazil in 1768. Commerçon named the genus in honor of his commander, though it was actually Commerçon’s assistant Jeanne Baret, the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, who is credited by some accounts with the actual discovery of the specimen. The plant became a botanical sensation in Europe, bringing a touch of tropical brilliance to gardens worldwide.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

This image is a macro of several bracts of the Beautiful (or Great) Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis), according to iNaturalist. (I couldn't find a sign for this one!) The bracts are groups of specialized leaves that emphasize the much smaller white blossoms when the plant is in bloom. There are three bracts in the image: upper right, middle right and middle left. The leaves in each bract are a nearly shocking pink at the edges, shifting closer to red in the center. The two bracts on the right are in sharp focus, while the left bract gradually moves out of focus toward the edge of the frame due to shallow depth of field. In addition to the color, the image highlights the texture of the leaves and the tracery of their delicate veins. The background is a riot of blurry, partially visible leaves from the bracts and at the very top of the image the bluish-gray blur of a distant wall.
