somebody tell whoever is making the next fallout to put some branchiopods in there. not that I don't love cockroaches or think they would not survive nuclear armageddon, but I think the setting is missing an even more un-killable earthling

I keep quoting this one image lol but it's useful. So here, ostracods you see in light blue.

But what crevice saw is "Conchostraca" a paraphyletic group of Branchiopoda, seen in dark blue (as he said, closer to insects)
Chelicerates are red (spiders being Araneae), crustaceans are blue/purple, and you see within that are insects in brown

Application of modern mathematical methods for species discrimination in the water fleas (Cladocera: Branchiopoda) that appear similar to the human eye: case of Bosmina (Bosmina) longirostris (O.F. Muller, 1776) from European Eurasia and Sakhalin Island bioRxivpreprint
Application of modern mathematical methods for species discrimination in the water fleas (Cladocera: Branchiopoda) that appear similar to the human eye: case of Bosmina (Bosmina) longirostris (O.F. Muller, 1776) from European Eurasia and Sakhalin Island
Intraspecific morphological variability presents a complex challenge for biological systematics and biomonitoring, particularly for organisms with high phenotypic plasticity, such as zooplankton. Morphological differences between individuals of the water flea species Bosmina longirostris (Crustacea: Cladocera) are difficult to distinguish visually, parthenogenetic females look morphologically uniform within the species; nevertheless, they demonstrate differences attributable to their geographic origin and developmental stage. A reference dataset of microscopic images was created for the study, including populations from two geographically separated regions (seven ones from European Russia and seven ones from Sakhalin Island in the Pacific Ocean (Far East of Russia) and two age groups, demonstrating the ability of a neural network classify to successfully the intraspecific morphological variation. This study demonstrates that deep learning methods are prospective for the detection and understanding of fine morphological intraspecific differences in the cladocerans.

oohh, #taxonomistappreciationday again. Hi, I wander around and collect crustaceans out of temporary freshwater. I'm not affiliated & I have no resources besides what I buy myself, so I don't really assess whether or not I'm finding new species, I just document everything. Found this a few days ago

Hidden-break diversity in pancrustacean rRNA profiles
Background In the 28S rRNA molecule of many invertebrates, a hidden break splits this large subunit into two noncovalently associated fragments (28Sa and 28Sb), masking 28S in electrophoretic profiles...

Some Water fleas (Branchiopoda) have what are called winter eggs (Ephippia), which can survive harsh conditions (like winter). I found this one in my plankton sample this week.

#Triops egg separation. After the last one has died I siphon out all the sand of the tank and swirl it around in a bucket. The eggs and detritus of the same specific weight ends up in the middle and can be collected with a plastic pipette. This goes into an espresso glass to dry out. #branchiopoda

Did some improvements on my #triops housing. Installed a small 5V pump with a piece of filter foam made into a cylinder, resulting in a so called Hamburger Mattenfilter. Triops are growing quickly, feeding them with fish food ground into dust. #branchiopoda #crustacean #tadpoleshrimp
