Some Water fleas (Branchiopoda) have what are called winter eggs (Ephippia), which can survive harsh conditions (like winter). I found this one in my plankton sample this week.

This is the first time I’ve picked up a Branchiopoda in samples from Cromer, so I’m super happy! This one is from the genus Podon.

somebody tell whoever is making the next fallout to put some branchiopods in there. not that I don't love cockroaches or think they would not survive nuclear armageddon, but I think the setting is missing an even more un-killable earthling

Fairy shrimp (Branchiopoda: Anostraca)
oohh, #taxonomistappreciationday again. Hi, I wander around and collect crustaceans out of temporary freshwater. I'm not affiliated & I have no resources besides what I buy myself, so I don't really assess whether or not I'm finding new species, I just document everything. Found this a few days ago

"Here we report on a new discovery of Early Devonian clam shrimp, which stands apart from previously reported finds as it represents an almost monospecific mass mortality averaging many thousands of specimens per square meter."

Freshwater #Crustmas drama: does the Leptodora at left scare you with its single eye? It scares Daphnia, which it preys on. Yet both are distant cousins (Branchiopoda, Cladocera) 🧪

Also, Daphnia is giving birth in this pic

These critters are actually shrimp from the Branchiopoda group. They date back to the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic Era. I may have found a new pet...

This is a triop - a small, three-eyed crustaceans.
Following a torrential summer downpour in Northern Arizona, hundreds of bizzare, prehistoric looking critters emerged from tiny eggs.

I keep quoting this one image lol but it's useful. So here, ostracods you see in light blue.

But what crevice saw is "Conchostraca" a paraphyletic group of Branchiopoda, seen in dark blue (as he said, closer to insects)
Chelicerates are red (spiders being Araneae), crustaceans are blue/purple, and you see within that are insects in brown

The closest known relative of insects is WEIRD! Remipedes live in marine caves (you have to cave dive) and are venomous. Their names are fun: Godzillius & Morlockia.

How did insects go from a common ancestor with these guys onto land? Here's one idea (but no fossils so we don't know)!

Cyclopoida and Harpacticoida are mutually monophyletic once Canuelloida is removed form Harpacticoida. I’m not working on Branchiopoda but there was a similar study on them several years ago:
