When fascists win, centrists get to feel good about themselves because they are kinder and more tolerant than those people. When progressives win, centrists find themselves cruel and narrow minded by comparison, and can't bear that feeling.
This all reminds me of the reactions to DSA wins here. A lot of the centrists are much more comfortable with fascism than with democratic socialism.
The mayoral discourse in Berlin continues to be *utterly* unhinged. If the AfD had topped the polls the narrative would be “finally the people have been heard!” but since the Left won, it’s all “Queer Islamofascists and Woke are trying to conquer us with, er, affordable rents!”
