Y'all - this is literally insane. I am pretty sure that I have never seen automated satellite intensity estimates this high on an Atlantic hurricane. Dvorak T-numbers approaching 8.5 are almost always with west Pac supertyphoons. Graphic from UW-CIMSS.

Last week I got to visit CIMSS. If you’ve been to UW-Madison you’ve seen it: the tower with the satellite dishes on top.
But its life-saving forecasting & data collection are at risk from NOAA cuts.
Here’s “Earthrise,” a daily CIMSS satellite image set to music. www.channel3000.com/news/federal...

The Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) satellite-derived intensity estimate peaked at 185 knots for #Melissa -- which, according to the developer at CIMSS, is the highest value to date for any tropical cyclone.

Supertyphoon Bavi looking rather incredible (and threatening) as it moves toward the Marianas. Automated satellite estimate has it about 145 kt per CIMSS.

A comprehensive article of what is at stake with the current budget proposed by the DoC ➡️ NOAA.

Nearly every aspect of what we do at NHC has been touched by NOAA Research in one facet or another to our benefit.

#AOML, #CIMSS, #CIRA, #CIMAS all play key roles & losing any of them would be horrific.

The tiny eye from #Erin is messing with objective estimate. I re-ran some D-PRINT intensity estimates with the ADT centering position and saw 25kt increases! Now much closer to aircraft data and best track. Definitely love my colleagues at CIMSS.

Can we get some microwave overpasses please??
