Piyush Goyal: 'Problem Was Caused by You', Developed World Must Pay Climate Bill
Speaking in Berlin, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal challenged the European Union and developed nations over climate accountability and unfulfilled financial pledges. Goyal asserted that developed countries are historically responsible for emissions and environmental degradation, noting that Europe grew its economies by burning coal and must shoulder mitigation costs. Confronting claims during an exchange, Goyal stated, "The problem was caused by you," emphasising that India supports 17 percent of the global population while contributing less than 3 percent of carbon emissions. He highlighted that an Indian citizen's per capita carbon emissions remain a fraction of European levels. Goyal also called out the West for zero delivery on the promised 100 billion dollars in climate finance to support the Global South. Pointing out India's rapid expansion of clean energy alongside its imperative to meet the food and energy needs of 1.4 billion people, he argued that developing economies should not be penalised for historical carbon burdens created by industrialised nations...

Problem caused by you: Piyush Goyal blames developed nations for climate crisis
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday blamed developed nations for the climate crisis, accusing them of contributing disproportionately to carbon emissions while failing to deliver promised financial support to developing countries. “Who's responsible for this mess in the first place? Where did the ozone layer get damaged? Who sent all that carbon into the atmosphere?” Goyal said at a roundtable at the Berlin Global Dialogue. “I represent 17% of the world's population, but my contribution to carbon emissions is less than 3%. You (Europe) represent probably 3% or 4% of the world's population, yet your contribution to those carbon emissions — or this mess — is humongous. The problem was caused by you,” he said. Goyal's remarks came amid a dispute over climate finance commitments made by developed countries to support developing nations in addressing climate change and reducing their emissions. Recalling the 2015 Paris climate conference, Goyal said developed countries had agreed to pay a greater share of the costs of tackling climate change and support developing countries, including vulnerable island nations. “It was agreed that the developed countries, who have enjoyed the fruits of messing up the climate for so many decades, will pay a...

Q&A: Sonia Kwami on Oceana's Launch in Ghana

She is an experienced campaigner, movement builder, and development leader with over 22 years of experience advancing social, economic, environmental, and climate justice. Kwami holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master of Arts in Democracy, Governance, Law, and Development from the University of Cape Coast, as well as an Executive Leadership Certificate from the University of Oxford. Based in Accra, she also serves on several boards to help strengthen governance and civil society. What draws you to ocean advocacy? SK: I am a campaigner. I love to fight for justice, from ensuring equitable education for girls to campaigning for climate action. The opportunity to work with fisherfolk, local communities, and women in the fishing industry brings all those passions together. Millions of Ghanaians rely a lot on the ocean for food and livelihoods. We also go to the sea for recreation – the beaches are filled with families during the holidays! As amazing as our coast is, Ghanaians are concerned about the polluting of our oceans. This problem is of national interest: Our food security, our tourism, and the wellbeing of our communities. That’s what...
