Anthropic Establishes Public Benefit Fund with 5% of Company Shares
Anthropic, the AI company, has announced the creation of a 'public benefit fund' that will commit 5% of its shares to support societal good initiatives. The fund, structured as a wholly-owned entity within the company, allows for potential additional contributions of 2% for every 50% increase in Anthropic's value. The company outlined broad plans for the fund's use, including large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. This move comes amid growing negative public sentiment toward the AI industry, which CEO Dario Amodei has described as a 'crisis of trust.' Anthropic has already committed $200 million to study AI's impact on the job market, but the company acknowledges that bolder approaches may be necessary given the rapid pace of AI progress. The governance structure and specific decision-making processes for the fund will be detailed in the coming months. The announcement aligns with broader industry efforts to address public concerns about AI's societal impact, though the company has not yet specified how the fund will be managed or which projects will receive support. The timing of the announcement, just before the TechCrunch Founder Summit, suggests a strategic effort to position Anthropic as a responsible leader in the AI space. The company's focus on public benefit initiatives may help mitigate criticism about AI's role in job displacement and other societal challenges. While the fund's exact scope remains unclear, the commitment to allocate a significant portion of company shares to societal projects represents a notable step in corporate responsibility within the AI sector.

BP lost $24bn in Russia. Corporations that chase profits in authoritarian states are complicit in the systems that enable repression. Profit is not an excuse. #Russia #CorporateResponsibility #HumanRights https://www.worldeconomics.com/Thoughts/Places-for-Investors-to-Avoid.aspx
Places for Investors to Avoid - Insights & Data from World Economics
Country Governance is crucial for investors, as BP found recently, taking a $24bn charge in its accounts, after deciding to abandon its 19.75% stake in Rosneft, the Russian oil and gas giant. - - Many other companies and investors have lost heavily in recent years by allowing short term profit to outweigh the risk of dealing with countries with poor Governance. Its all too easy to ignore warning signs and dismiss them as applying only to organisations that have somehow fallen foul of a particular regime. Just one example of a warning sign (largely ignored by investors in Russia over 15 years ago) is shown below as an appendix to this Insight. - - To help investors to measure risk in relation to Governance, World Economics has devised a continuously revised global Index, to bring together crucial aspects of Governance that collectively measure just how good/bad countries are in relation to legality, media and political freedom, and corruption. The Index would (for example have shown BP that Russia was close to the very bottom of the global Governance league, and perhaps one of the last places in the world in which to invest shareholders capital. - - The Global Governance Index gives Russia an E rating - the lowest of the five A-E ratings ( - read more here - ). The warning signs are plentiful. There are many reasons why investors should avoid Russia, and over 28 other countries with very poor Governance (and even more with slightly less awful Governance). The - Governance full Index is shown here - . Explore the full analysis and implications for global investment.
