Hiking Day 1, #Buffalo#PoundProvincialPark We followed some of the #TransCanadaTrail hiked Joe's Loop and had ice cream at the #TrailHeadCafe. It was +24°C, 151 m elevation gain. This is a popular #cycleroute and part of the #discgolf course.

This is on a designated #cycleroute from #Blackfriars to #OldSt and beyond. Given #Smithfield is going to be a building site for prob yrs why is there no designated diversion for #cycling. As a non commuter it was seriously dangerous/counterintuitive to navigate.

An end is in sight to cyclists having to wait 45 minutes for a ship to pass the lift-bridge at the St-Lambert locks (between Montreal via Parc Drapeau & the south shore communities) by building an alternate cycleroute at the other end of the locks to be used when the lift bridge is up.

Princes Street / George Street – shock changes The Council is expecting more than £90m income (over 3 years) from the new Visitor Levy, and it had been expected that some £30m of this would go towards the promised major George Street project, incorporating a ‘cycle street’ which would also form the crucial central link of CCWEL. However at the full council meeting on 12.2.26, an amendment proposed by the SNP, supported by Labour and the Lib Dems, won the day, defeating two (very different) alternatives from the Conservative and Green parties. The victorious amendment scrapped George Street funding, basically on the grounds that Princes Street is in more urgent need, and allocated £200K towards drawing up plans for Princes Street and the Waverley Valley. Foot of Walk to Dock St - official opening 10am Wed 18 March The new cycleroute, which extends the Leith Walk cycle lanes to Dock Street (with a later connection to Ocean Terminal) will be officially opened at 10.15am on Wednesday 18 March at Sandport Place bridge. The Spokes cargobike stall will be there (maps at special stall prices!) along with a Dr Bike and cargobikes to try at a Porty Community Energy stall. Please come along, see the ribbon-cutting, and say hello at our stall! Either come direct to Sandport Bridge, or meet at 10a.m. at the junction of Henderson Street with Yardheads, where there will be a walking party arriving at Sandport Bridge by 10.15 for the opening. The route (dashed blue line on the drawing below) is part of the wider Leith Connections project which aims to provide a more pleasant area to get about. It also will provide an alternative to the tramlined roads between Foot of Walk and Ocean Terminal. Pictures of ghost bike before & after refresh by Infrasisters 5.2 Ghost Bikes You may know of the worldwide tradition, where concerned friends or members of the public sometimes install a white-painted ‘ghost bike’ at the site of a cycling fatality – a memorial to the victim and also a reminder and warning to other road users, not least motorists. A member of the public contacted us about the Kings Road Portobello junction ghost bike (StuartElliott & HeatherStronach), which was deteriorating, and Infrasisters kindly gave it a great refresh – after which Rosanna of Infrasisters then did the same at the West End (Zhi Min Soh). Meanwhile, years after these deaths, interim safety improvements have been made at Portobello, but permanent solutions are still awaited here and at the West End. Speak to your councillors if this concerns you.

scottish water webpage about the road closure - no mention of cycleroute Complaint to Scottish Water I understand from speaking to a roads inspector from Edinburgh Council that you are aware of this case on the CCWEL cycle path at Rosebery Crescent, Edinburgh. As NRSWA technical lead, are you able to provide a response? A Northbound diversion remains missing and I've heard nothing further from Scottish Water or Clancy since this issue was first reported on the 1st of November last year. The local residents letter and webpage do not mention cyclists on this main cycleway, as pointed out by Spokes, but do state a diversion would be provided for all road users. With the works moving to the next phase, we're looking to get answers to the below: What were the failings that led to the works not providing a northbound diversion and not identifying the cycleway? What is the policy and purpose of yellow "cycle lane closed" signage installed on Wednesday 22nd January? Is it normal to not receive a response to an enquiry and how is inaction from contractors managed? Was the design carried out by someone accredited with the IHE in Temporary Traffic Management (certicate/diploma)? Your assistance in this would be greatly appreciated but let me know if there's a complaints procedure instead. This isn't the first issue encountered with Clancy, but I believe the most lessons can be learnt here. With an increase in cycling and total cyclists killed or seriously injured in Edinburgh, I hope you'll agree that this is an important issue.

Start of Spokes article... Princes Street & George Street – the future Following the Council decision of 12 February 2026 on how to use revenue from the Visitor Levy, there is considerable uncertainty around projects to improve Princes Street and George Street, in terms of funding, timescales and project scope. Spokes has therefore written to Transport and Environment convener Cllr Stephen Jenkinson suggesting various options which would provide wider footways and safe and attractive cycling conditions in both these world-renowned streets. For George Street, low cost interim options are suggested if funding for the full scheme is not likely for the forseeable future. In the case of George Street, this has been chosen as the route for the central core of CCWEL, the City Centre east/west link, the west and east sections of which are now complete and already continue east down the whole of Leith Walk and onwards, nearly to Ocean Terminal. George Street is an essential missing link – see Fig 2. Fig 2: The George Street CCWEL missing link. The drawing is from a Cycling Scotland report on automatic counter data which shows cyclists already making up nearly 10% of trips (including pedestrian trips) at the east on Leith Walk cycle lanes and at the west on Roseburn CCWEL section. Following the visitor levy decision we are unclear if the existing proposals can still be funded. However, if they are not going ahead – or not in the relatively near future – then we urge that low cost changes are made as rapidly as possible to complete CCWEL, including connections at Charlotte and St Andrew Squares, and to improve pedestrian conditions. We suggest two alternatives, even if they are only interim solutions for a number of years. 3a [our strong preference] Remove central parking, and reduce traffic lanes from 4 to 2, with wider footways and unidirectional kerb-protected cycle lanes on both sides This type of approach was in fact accepted to be a feasible low-cost option by transport officers in a TEC debate a few years ago, when concern was growing about escalating project costs, but was rejected in favour of developing the more comprehensive, but costly, current scheme. It also has the advantage of preserving symmetry, a major concern for heritage groups. Under an initial or temporary low cost, scheme, the central setts etc could be retained and the space repurposed, for example seating and planters with trees. The proposal would ideally also be accompanied by restrictions on moving traffic, for example allowing only taxis, buses and necessary deliveries, although this could be a later stage so as to aid early implementation. The removal of central area parking would in any case substantially reduce private motor traffic.

BIKE LANES WORKING Edinburgh’s protected bike lanes on Leith Walk and on Roseburn CCWEL route now account for almost 10% of vehicle and pedestrian journeys on both, based on Cycling Scotland survey data in late 2025. What’s more, despite its tramlines, Leith Walk has had zero bike tramline crashes, whilst serious injuries continue in the badly designed initial tram route. LESSONS LEARNED – AND TO BE LEARNED  The protected bike lane success affirms the Council’s decision [p8] that its Primary Cycle Network should largely comprise segregated lanes on main roads. But - gaps need filled! What would bike usage be on the above routes if the missing George St link between them existed? – we suggest [p9] how to do this quickly if the planned complete revamp is currently too costly.  The absence of tramline injuries affirms the Council’s wisdom in providing segregated lanes on Leith Walk. But - potentially dangerous sections of the Granton/ Bioquarter future tramline proposals [p9] concern us. FOOT OF WALK to DOCK STREET The traffic-free Foot of Walk - Dock Street route, largely comprising bidirectional segregated onroad bike lanes, extends CCWEL and Leith Walk lanes north, with a planned continuation to Ocean Terminal. Princes Street (interim) success Spokes has had a major success in our seemingly interminable campaign for bike lanes, and more pedestrian space, on Princes Street. If you emailed councillors when we suggested, thank you! Eventual success is still very far from certain, but the Planning Committee, by 9 votes to 4, rejected a draft strategy for Princes Street and the Waverley Valley which would have ruled out bike lanes and wider footways completely. This is highly significant, as it is very unusual for councillors to ask officers to go away and have a complete rethink on a major draft strategy document. The Spokes written deputation to the Committee is here. Spokes tram consultation response, extract... Our submission covers many points, but three major issues (concerns and opportunities!) are.. • Great concern over cycling safety in the Bridges corridor. We put forward a range of ameliorative or alternative measures, including single-line working, one-way tram (with Pleasance/Market Street the other way), tramlines on one side of the road with a cycleroute on the other, a bus gate/traffic filter; or choosing one of the other routes which are still seen by the Council as possible future options, such as Morrison Street and the Meadows (an option also favoured by Edinburgh World Heritage) • We urge dropping North Bridge tram stop and replacing it by two stops – at Waverley Steps to serve east Princes Street and the rail station, and at the North Bridge arcade, to serve the Old Town and again the rail station. There are multiple reasons for this suggestion, in addition to a major cycling safety aspect • There is a massive opportunity to incorporate an active travel bridge over the mainline railway, linking North Edinburgh Network to the new Roseburn to Fountainbridge path without long ramps down to road level and up again. This would be a truly transformative addition to the city’s offroad network. Our drawing shows the tram (red) ramping up to the A8 crossing, with the active travel path in orange. The yellow dotted ramps are probably not needed, since most users would stay at high level, and those needing local access could ascend either at Roseburn or at the existing new Sauchiebank ramp. Example ... Policy suggestion submitted by Spokes... When granting planning permission for any development likely to attract the public, including public buildings and private buildings, cycle parking of the Sheffield rack design should be required. In the case of small businesses such as shops in a High Street this requirement could be met by paying the Council to install a couple of Sheffield racks on the footway nearby. Should there already be such public bike parking in existence within a specified distance of the premises, then the requirement could be disregarded. In the case of larger businesses or public buildings the bike parking should normally be closer to the main entrance than the nearest car space (other than disabled car spaces). example 'site' idea from a local resident... Edinburgh Road, Linlithgow The road should be 20mph from the railway bridge to the canal bridge Also, ideally, there should be a segregated cycleroute, as described below It is now a primarily residential road, with additional flats and a care home now under construction. We should be able to walk or cycle along in peace. Also, there is a blind corner near Maidlands where traffic often travels too fast. Ideally you would move all parking to the south side of the road and install a segregated cycleroute along the north side, starting at the railway bridge (and the underbridge to Tesco) and continuing as far as Maidlands, for the connection to Springfield and (hopefully) for a future ramp up the canal. Council request for ideas... This survey allows you to submit ideas, proposals or sites to be assessed for potential inclusion in the Proposed LDP2. You will be able to place a pin on a map to tell us where your idea is. The survey must be completed in one go and cannot be saved as you go along. Please submit one idea, proposal or site, per form. This will allow us to assess each idea, proposal or site, individually.

New town deputn speaker, Mike Birch Leith LInks speaker Start of written deputation LEITH LINKS COMMUNITY COUNCIL & LEITH HARBOUR & NEWHAVEN COMMUNITY COUNCIL WRITTEN DEPUTATION TO TRANSPORT & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE - 22 MAY 2025 Item 7.5 City Mobility Plan – Capital Investment Programme Prioritisation Outputs with specific reference to the Project ‘Leith Connection Phase 3 (LDPAP Hawthornevale to Seafield) This is joint submission from two Community Councils in Leith. We understand and accept the need to rationalise and set priorities for the Transport programme over coming years, but we have comments on the findings of this report, which we feel merits amendment. In Para 3.3, it is stated that “the CMP Implementation Plan is supported by four documents setting out delivery actions for Active Travel, Parking, Public Transport and Road Safety.” We find that the scoring and some of the decisions on Pausing or Proceeding in the report do not take adequate account of some of these, particularly as regards Public Transport. We also query the lack of transparency in the scoring process. And are unclear as to how the scoring deals with comparisons, in order to identify the best projects to deliver modal shift. To take a specific example – ‘on our patch’ – our two community councils, covering the coastal strip from Seafield to Granton, are unconvinced that the Leith Connections Phase 3 (Hawthornevale to Seafield cycle route) is correctly evaluated as qualifying to Proceed. We would recommend that it is instead moved to the Paused list. We are not anti Active Travel, and we support rather than oppose a cycle route through this area, but we find ourselves asking the following questions:
