It took eight years of determined fighting by her mum but today a coroner rules that benefit cuts error led to Jodey Whiting’s death bit.ly/3HB6x2t she was deemed fit to work by @DWPgovuk having missed an assessment because she was in hospital with pneumonia.

The @DWPgovuk is to ‘re-take’ its decision of last December not to compensate the 1950s #WASPI women, Sec of State tells Commons. A Judicial Review into that decision is due to begin next month in the High Court. Report by @rightsnet .

As @DWPgovuk reveals who will lose PIP bit.ly/4kwuera it becomes even more difficult to suggest they can work or work harder to make up the loss. But it’s simpler to take £4.8bn off disabled people than raise taxes on wealthy people with good lawyers.

Around 575,000 people over pension age get the daily living component of PIP - they can’t apply for it at that age but they can keep it if they already have it. @DWPgovuk tells me the changes to the qualifying rules will not affect them because they are not routinely reassessed

New figures from @DWPgovuk: Child poverty has reached a record high. 4.5 million children below poverty line in 2023/24, an increase of 100,000 from previous year. @CPAGUK says it will rise to 4.8m by 2029/30 without action by Govt - scrapping 2 child limit & ending benefit cuts
March 27, 2025 at 10:42 AM
So @hmtreasury is forcing @DWPgovuk to find more savings, in part by cutting the Universal Credit Standard Allowance (after raising it a bit). Here's what the Green Paper said about the current position & why UC needs to rise: it's been cut so low it's driving destitution.

Victims pay for government errors. The @DWPgovuk pays people the wrong amount sometimes for years because they chose not to check half the information they were given, then makes the carers repay the money, often thousands of pounds bit.ly/4kuT3nq

It seems Labour is ignoring the provisos.

Fools rush in where angels fear tread. As an Alzheimer's carer for 40 years I despair, to announce the loss of winter fuel benefit within days of office to be followed by a hike in energy by 10% the vicious circle is almost complete. Apply online or call @DWPgovuk? With dementia?

Big thanks to @JoPlatt.bsky.social for sharing her challenging journey with #LongCovid. I agree - current @DWPgovuk approaches to assessment fail #pwLC, #pwME. Proposed changes will only worsen things, with devastating consequences. @longcovidsupport.bsky.social I’m with you - time to rethink!

Govt meanstesting winter fuel payment is causing @DWPgovuk severe problems. bit.ly/4gsx6n1 But headline is misleading. Anyone who applies by 21 December and qualifies will get WFP eventually. Tragic that thousands have applied because they need it but failed the meanstest

I’ve been an Alzheimer’s/Dementia carer (for my family) & I’m deeply concerned about the #GOVUK proposal to cut the winter fuel allowance. To suggest sufferers or carers apply for #DWPgovuk benefits is unrealistic many forget how to turn on TV let alone even have a PC #alzheimerssociety #DementiaUK

The @DWPgovuk is supposed to recognise fetal valproate spectrum disorder but many families say the assessors and tribunals still aren't aware of valproate and its effects.

Campaigner @JanetWilliams99 says it underlines why redress for valproate victims is so necessary 7/8

There's a nasty #scam text message going round about the winter allowance purporting to be from the @DWPgovuk. It's not, it's been sent by crooks. It's probably worth warning older folk who may be targeted to ignore it and report it as spam

Short trip over to Caxton House to meet the team at @DWPgovuk Legal Advisors.

I heard more about recent work on the Pensions Bill & the Fraud Bill, & an opportunity for me to say thank you for everything incredible @GovernmentLegal lawyers do to support & advise the Government.

The Sunday Times is campaigning for Britain's valproate children to get the financial redress they were promised by an inquiry in 2020.

The children have lifelong needs that won't improve and yet the @DWPgovuk treats these families like every other benefit claimant. 2/8

“Let us know when she’s home & you are caring for her,” said the @DWPgovuk case handler.

But I was already caring — 24/7 in hospital, doing meds, feeding, fluids, personal care.

Hospital stepped back because they didn’t have the staff or training 🧵

Good to hear @stephenctimms talk about ‘economic prize’ of enabling more carers to stay in labour market + talking passionately about awful issues of Carers Allowance overpayments. Mentions 1 thing @DWPgovuk trying - sending text message when earnings tip over the threshold. 2/5
