#Data-Regulation
Ed tech, which exploded early in the pandemic, is now a $213 billion industry. But regulation hasn't kept pace with growth, and experts say its branding papers over practices like data harvesting. Emily Cherkin calls it "big tech in a sweater vest" sustainablemedia.substack.com/p/big-tech-i...

More than three-quarters of South Carolina voters back set rules for data centers, and majorities in both parties say they're more likely to back candidates who support power, water, and environmental regulation, The Post and Courier reported, citing new polls.

Polling shows most South Carolinians oppose data centers without guardrails for development
New polling by a national industry group shows South Carolinians’ support for data centers is minimal unless regulations are place. They hope the findings will lead to regulations at the state level.

Another good treasure trove is the privacy policy.

At the risk of sounding like Jeff Foxworthy, when your privacy page has a special caveat for every locality under the sun, there's some privacy fuckery going on.

It's like a guy who suspiciously knows every state's age of consent...

Google held 22 meetings on the EU’s so-called digital Omnibus alone, which waters down AI rules, for instance by giving companies more leeway in training models on personal data. Google, Amazon and Apple have also discussed proposed cloud regulation and online safety rules for children.

Britain is shifting AI medical-device regulation toward lifecycle monitoring. The reason is the failure mode: a model can pass pre-market tests, then drift as data, sites, users or software change. Approval is not proof forever. The safety case has to keep producing evidence after deployment.

If the ai giants were trust worthy or responsible enough to be involved in ai regulation they would not have released unsafe chat bots or would have recalled the product after safety issues. They would not have ever build energy and water hogging environment destroying data centers to begin with...

Tools like Z-Lib and the people who actually contribute to keeping access to information free are literally going to jail for what they do, while companies like OpenAI are paid to scrape (and misinterpret) the same data, & have free reign to plagiarise without fear of litigation or even regulation.

Underlying Asia’s data center buildout is a grievance: the benefits of digital infrastructure (tax revenue, jobs, grid investment) are diffuse and national, while the costs are concentrated and local. buff.ly/eVN6Z4v

One other regulation I'd really like to see is forcing AI companies to get rights to use material as training data, and a blanket ban on offering models that were trained on data that they did not get the rights to, or which were trained on models that used data they didn't get the rights to.
Literally everything I've written for public consumption is in the training data, often in more than one language. Via the Anthropic settlement I'm getting (not nearly enough) compensation for about 20 of them, but it's doubtful I'll ever get compensation for 28 years of writing on my blog, etc.
Been working on an opinion piece related to this & oh did I go down the rabbit hole. 🙃

I found out that your book, Old Man’s War, appears in a reconstruction of the LibGen material associated w/Books1 and Books2…so pirated. Not sure if you already knew that, but it makes your point rather literal

Government regulation beginning in the 1970s cleaned up the nation’s rivers__the Hudson River.

Now they want to put data centers in rivers to cool them off.

What could go wrong ⁉️
