if your pastor is telling you a Hebrew word has a single English meaning, they're almost certainly lying to you.

sooooo they're singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in churches?
do they, um, understand what that song is about?

Ok, I'm going to try to tackle this right now. (Thread)
Got a Tweetstorm building abt progressive Christians' insistence Jesus's death narrative = he was killed for offending religious leaders (even w evidence to the contrary) and it's not going to do any good but it won't leave my brain alone.

Not surprising Christian atheists loudly proclaiming they studied other religions still think all work like Xianity bc that’s lit how comparative religion is taught in schools.
Come with me on a magical chart journey.

Oh boy do Inhave thoughts, which I’ll detail later.
In short, this feels like par for the course with Brooks. I’m happy he’s happy, but this seems on track for a guy who always seemed surprised when he had an emotion.

I see a LOT of pastors and other Christian clergy say they love Jews and they preach love for Jews but I always wonder if they've thought through what it would take to actually untangle anti-Jewish teaching from preaching the NT.

Jews hold 1.1% of the world's wealth. We're 0.2% of the world's population.
Christians hold 55% of the world's wealth. They are 31% of the population.
And you think the problem is Jews?
1.1% of the money vs. 55%.

Okay, let's talk about why attempts to critique (or hell, straight up stick it to) Christianity in SFF often end up being more anti-Jewish than they are anti-Christian.

Why is JewSky constantly joking about "Spanish frogs"?
Because of a gentleman named Jeremiah Vance who insisted that the Hebrew word for "frog" (tzfardea) is the same as the word for the group of Jews that moved to Spain (sephardim).

Inherent in reducing Judaism & Christianity to simply both equal "daughter" religions of the religion of 1st-century Judea is erasure of Jewish peoplehood: reducing Jewishness to merely religion is long-standing genocidal Christian strategy.

Reading Christian commentary on Good Samaritan & 90% of it's "the kohen & Levite wouldn't help the man bc Ritual Purity" & 90% of that includes "so it was a GENTILE who helped!!!" & it's amazing how so many "experts" can be this wrong.

So I'm writing a thing on the trio of parables that ends with the prodigal son and like MAN OH MAN do Christian commentators insist that Jews hated shepherds.

I think there’s a significant problem with how Christians in general understand the parables, & how Christian clergy tend to preach them. Parables get treated like they’re Aesop’s fables: allegories that have a single, straightforward moral.

Jews are the largest non-Christian group in Tennessee...
...at 0.33% of the state's population.
Just to give you a sense of how hegemonic Christianity is.

So, the man with the withered hand story is actually a prime example of how the gospels demonize--or get used to demonize--completely normal behavior from Jews.

I also think the tendency to demonize Jews in parable intepretation way stems from dissonance within Christian thought about how to view Jesus’s teachings.

a thing I've always loved about Judaism is it makes clear that goodness takes practice
it's not about performing great, spontaneous charitable acts because something moves you emotionally
it's about day after day, doing the little things, whether you want to or not

Thread to make blonde non-Jewish geeks angry:
like okay I understand that Tolkien linguistically, at least, probably intended dwarves to be the closest thing to Jews in his world but
Tolkien elves are obviously Jewish

I wish supposedly progressive Christians understood that very little about 1st-century, Roman-occupied Judaea maps directly to 21st-century America in politics/religion/economics/etc & attempts to equate them end up villainizing the victims.

if you're thinking of how to do some sort of Christian Rosh Hashanah thing: don't.
Not only is it appropriative, it's also theologically unsound! Your religion has a whole different system (Jesus) for dealing with repentance/renewal.

The thing is that most schools in the US are not going to teach openly about antisemitism because that would involve being honest about Christian supercessionism & evangelism and how central anti-Jewishness is to most forms of Christianity.
