Spent time figuring out an #opensource way to take my flat vector designs and turn them into beveled depthmap for a fiber laser. One where I can make a single script to go from svg to depthmap. The results are very satisfying.

So, after fighting my depthmap export script for a few DAYS, I finally got it working! Now I can import objects from external blend files and have them show up correctly!
Well, I could. If blender didn't segfault after around 100 exported tiles now, FUCK.

It's *a lot* more scalable. If you could just get better depth maps by training on a few labelled (image, depthmap) pairs, then predicting depth maps on any arbitrary photo off the internet, and use that to further improve your depth predictions, that'd be huge.

Currently digging around weird github repositories to try and find any useful software. All I really want is a depthmap mpg or similar.

This is done with the help of a selfmade depthmap. A depthmap is basically a black and white version of the image where black is what is closest to the viewer and white is furthest away. Inbetween colors bring distance.

Recently made some coins (for a secret project) on the fiber laser using the depthmap functionality of #meerk40t. Shined them up in a magnetic tumbler then darkened them with brass black. #laser #OpenSource
