They are very colorful and shiny due to barium sulphate crystals inside their bodies, they come in various symmetrical forms, and some join together to form colonies. The pictured ones look like a many handed star, a banana, and 2 that look like dumbbell weights.

Adventures In Microscopy: Desmids!

This sample was gathered at the base of a waterfall I saw while hiking.

Desmids have high degrees of symmetry which remind me of paper snowflakes. Enjoy!

Uit een bergmeertje bij Lunz am See met vrij gebufferd water, o.a. drijvend fonteinkruid en veel holpijp.

Last week in #limnology I realized I could mirror what I was seeing on the fancy scope onto the tv screens in our new teaching lab. This brought me so much joy🤩 This is #micrasterias The bilateral symmetry and the clear separation (isthmus) between the semi-cells is a characteristic of #desmids
