"Attention and its Crisis in Digital Society" This work argues that attention problems in digital society should be understood through social and cultural contexts, not only as simple cognitive decline. #Attention #DigitalSociety #Cognition doi.org/10.4324/9781...

That closes the series. Twenty notes, one argument: friction is not only an obstacle. Some of
it is infrastructure.

Which forms of friction are harmful? And which quietly hold society together?
A discriminatory barrier is not a clear boundary. Bureaucracy is not accountability. The task
is discernment: what must stay resistant enough for us to stay grounded?

If millions are exhausted at once, the first question probably should not be: what is wrong with people?
Which labour was transferred to individuals? Which boundaries disappeared?
Structural effects are easily misdiagnosed as personal deficits.

It may not be AI, automation or digitalization. It may be the systematic attempt to eliminate
resistance from everyday life.
Across healthcare, platforms and work, friction is treated as a defect to engineer away. Aworld that responds without pushing back.

A society can become highly connected while becoming less socially integrated.
Connection is the availability of contact. Integration is stable relationships and mutual
obligation. You can receive hundreds of messages and lack durable recognition.

Mass personalization makes life smoother, faster, and more relevant. But when every person receives a different version of reality, society has to ask a harder question: what must stay shared?

The institution became an algorithm. The manager became you.
Managerial power does not disappear on platforms. It moves into rankings, metrics and
opaque allocation. Autonomy in name, continuous self-regulation in practice.

Every efficiency gain reorganizes interaction. Sometimes it removes what produced stability.
Automating a decision changes who can explain it. Removing a meeting changes where
disagreement becomes visible. Efficiency is an institutional choice.

Without stable constraints we have to invent our own direction continuously. More
exhausting than it sounds.
Orientation is never produced alone. Schedules, roles and limits supply the coordinates.
Remove them and choice expands while direction weakens.

Negotiation, disagreement, waiting and boundaries are not only inconveniences. They are
social experiences.
Disagreement confirms the other has a perspective of their own. Resistance is how we learn
we exist among others, not inside a responsive machine.

Vinyl. Film. Paper notebooks. Perhaps they reintroduce meaningful resistance into daily life.
A roll of film has a fixed number of exposures. The medium pushes back. Not nostalgia, but
bounded engagement with a natural stopping point.

Better sleep. Better focus. Better habits. At what point does self-care become another fulltime job?
When every state is measurable, discomfort stops being ordinary and becomes evidence that
more intervention is needed. Care turns into obligation.

When nothing around us sets stable limits, we become our own continuous monitoring
system.
Structure lets attention rest. Without it there is no reliable point at which scanning can stop. A
smooth environment can produce a restless subject.

Digital systems remove visible work. Planning, choosing, remembering, monitoring and
regulating remain.
The question is not whether digitalization saves labour. It is whose labour it saves, and where
the rest gets relocated.
