Jesus said to his disciples, "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last." John 15:16

Keep on bearing fruit for #Jesus - fruit that will last.

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: Requirements of Discipleship
Disciples are people who, like Jesus, have been captivated by God's love. In today's Gospel we hear Jesus describe three absolute impediments to being his disciple.

Jesus told us to make disciples, not converts. Conversion can be forced. Discipleship can’t. Big difference.

When Jesus told his disciples to take no sandals or staff, maybe he was saying: Don’t run. Don’t fight. Instead, show up with vulnerability, honesty, and humanity. That’s how we change the world - by being fully ourselves. #Discipleship #BeNotAfraid #FaithInAction

This is bananas anyway but I think it misses a fundamental characteristic of the disciples and discipleship that James sums up beautifully: be quick to listen, slow to speak, slower yet to anger. All other things aside, Charlie Kirk talked for a living
GOP Rep. Troy Nehls: “I would say if Charlie Kirk lived in the biblical times he’d of been the 13th disciple.”

Beyond *Being Disciples* and *The Cost of Discipleship*, what are some good books on discipleship, potentially for a parish read through? 📕

I'm thankful you're still a Christian because you have grown in the faith and discipleship in such a way that you can share important perspectives like this that help US grow as disciples!

I am also torn on this, because I think the church is inclined to do this in parallel to (or even instead of) "making disciples," when our community niche should in fact grow OUT of growth in discipleship.
So I'm reading *Doing the Math of Mission* and one of the really, um, Methodist coded things about it (perhaps derogatory, but playfully) is the harping on having a hyper localized mission. And, IDK, I go back and forth wondering whether that just turns the church into another nonprofit aid agency.

And if a community is taking discipleship seriously they will have a method to help disciples to discern their ministry.

It’s ironic that “preaching to the converted” is now our most important and difficult duty as Christians. We can’t justly claim our right-wing co-religionists are somehow “not really Christians.” They are, however, *bad disciples*. We need to guide them towards better discipleship.
*this* is why i’ve been telling well-meaning christians to stop dismissing these folks as “not really christian.”

if you’re mad, and you’re christian, you can use that to be the disruptor who talks politics & religion at thanksgiving dinner.
there is a major religion story not being included in these election postmortems

And yet, Jesus set the standard for discipleship in John 13:34-35:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Discipleship is potentially a very costly business, and they need to be prepared for that, as the full passage goes on to say. They could lose it all: friends, family, wealth, prestige, even their very lives. Sit down and add it up, decide if it's worth it to you, he tells his disciples.

the Lord is our shepherd. he provides us with immeasurable comfort, love, grace, and forgiveness. but as Psalm 23 demonstrates, these blessings have a reciprocal relationship with the obedience and discipleship of the believer. we are emboldened by the grace of God to be disciples of Christ.
