The antonym of gentrification is “disinvestment”
Are we ready to talk about how gentrification is mostly good
Yeah, I’ve never understood the idea that assimilation or gentrification is some awful thing.

Most of the residents love it; to wit, the Harlem Trader Joe’s is packed. That must really piss off these isolationists.

I also wonder what their plan is. Everyone on some separate cultural reservation?

I’m reading an academic paper that simultaneously warns of both disinvestment in low-income neighborhoods and gentrification pressures, and I’m genuinely uncertain what we’re supposed to do if disinvestment is bad but outside investment is also bad.

The first thing the Trump administration did was initiate disinvestment in higher education

The idea that this is an efficiency, or that they are just gutting woke programs is horseshit. It's a massive disinvestment in science.

This week we celebrated the transfer of three buildings that had suffered from years of disinvestment, away from their neglectful owners.

We will continue to address New York City's housing crisis with the scale and urgency New Yorkers deserve.

This is what happens after 45 years of disinvestment in public education.

It was a privilege to host some of the most important voices in our city this week: NYCHA Resident Association presidents.

For decades, these leaders have fought for their neighbors through years of disinvestment and neglect from every level of government.

You cannot publish the phrase “reverse decades of structural disinvestment in public higher education” at the New York Times. It’s illegal. You’d be arrested.

Living to witness the global disinvestment from human creativity by the capitalist class has been an absolutely depressing sight to behold.

Especially as someone who places art (yes, general 'art') among humanity's most divine aptitudes.

The exciting new version is "publish and perish," courtesy of public disinvestment from the humanities and the progressive adjunctification of academia.
"publish or perish" has been a thing for decades

Potential for crisis in the US right now is huge. Stock market disinvestment, plummeting foreign student/tourist numbers, disease outbreak, cascading government failure, security breakdown. Any number of different ways in which you could see something catastrophic happen, especially in combination.

Come on people, social media didn’t make kids bad at reading comprehension. That frames the unacceptable as inevitable. Mass disinvestment from humanities education, from teaching nuance, critique, and deliberation did. Policy is the problem and policy is the solution. Eyes on the prize.

Ruth Wilson Gilmore's concept of "organized abandonment" is useful here: the intentional disinvestment and neglect which creates group-level vulnerability to premature death. Organized abandonment kills more people than interpersonal violence, and it's not even close. It's worse.

my other thought is that you cannot disentangle the neoliberal turn in american political economy from resistance to integration. the popular pitch for state disinvestment from public goods was essentially “you can have your cake (services) and eat it too (black people won’t get them).”
and friedman was well aware that his ideas were being used as justification for and defense of resistance to integration and he just didn’t give a shit because it put him in closer proximity to power. a real asshole.

It’s not about declining humanities majors or declining humanities enrollments (which are respectively overblown and not a thing). It’s about structural disinvestment.
Our student numbers are up, 30%; we now have about 750 majors. Over the past 12 months, we lost 7 FTE and will lose another 3 in another 12 months, assuming no-one else passes or retires or leaves (although this last is not something people do from your institution).

And to be honest, though the systems are so complex you can never prove causation, the fact that our descent into the dumbest politics follows on four decades of systematic, institutional disinvestment from the liberal arts seems almost too on the nose and yet here we are.

The suffering of America's gun violence crisis is concentrated in Black neighborhoods damaged by decades of disinvestment and racial discrimination. Trump is unravelling efforts to solve the problem.

“solutions like closing schools are not really meaningful solutions,” says christin crabtree, running for minneapolis school board. “what that does is it shrinks the number of kids, it shrinks the level of stability in our district, and we end up responding to disinvestment with disinvestment.”

What’s missing: 1/ Any framing about what higher is or has been that misses the big public investment post-WW2 and then massive disinvestment starting in the 1980s which spirals into rising costs and student debt is disingenuous at best. 5/
