This is both an age and a rural America thing:
Pre-universal E911 requirements our address was "Rural Route 2 Box 296 [ZIP]"
This changed when I was in 2nd grade but I still remember that address. Our street did not have a name (though was a numbered state route) prior to then.

You can use it for e911 calls in most of the USA, except it won't provide location data to the dispatcher. 2G phones are still supported on some networks in Germany and China, and most of Africa as "regular" (call and text) phones. I gave mine to a girlfriend to use as backup for E911 calls.

Cranston really broke the mold when they built this neighborhood (across Spectacle Pond from Twin Oaks) - even street addresses on the odd side of the road, out of sequence, or BOTH. This causes election administration, mail delivery, and E911 response issues; GIS allows us to easily document them.

(and as an aside, the datacenter thing was just plain dumb, of course Mills is not going to block an E911 DC in a place with aging emergency comms infrastructure)

there are structural issues related to data centers but yes to the point here. xAI's facility is knowingly and willfully illegal per 40 year old provisions in federal law. Red letter illegal. There are obvious reasons why E911 is superior to this sort of thing on a day-to-day basis, and you'd never want to use the call boxes as your primary alerting system today.

It was. E911 knew physical phone location for land lines. Calltaker verified location of incident, saving ~40 seconds. That was estimated to save 1500 people a year for NYC. Cell phones only knew cell tower location then. Stations had maps and directions. NYC.
