Scientists have found that Emperor penguins face significant risks during their annual moult, when they shed and regrow their feathers. This process requires the birds to remain on stable sea ice for several weeks, as their old feathers are no longer waterproof and the moult is extremely energy-intensive, using up to 50% of their body mass. Recent satellite studies led by Dr Peter Fretwell at the British Antarctic Survey have revealed that the dramatic shrinkage of Antarctic sea ice between 2022 and 2024 left many penguins without safe platforms to complete this critical process. The findings suggest that thousands of penguins in West Antarctica, home to 30-40% of the global population, may have perished. While some birds may have migrated to other areas, this can disrupt breeding and feeding patterns, causing long-term population impacts. Observations also indicate some adaptation, with penguins beginning to moult on shallow ice shelves, although this may come with trade-offs. The research highlights how sudden environmental changes due to global warming can have immediate, severe consequences for wildlife. Fretwell plans further population studies in the Ross Sea to better quantify potential losses and adjust predictions for Emperor penguin survival.
