When governments flip direction every cycle, long term projects stall and public trust sinks.

This is what first-past-the-post produces by design.

Proportional representation creates stable majorities that support consistent long term policy.

One study revealed that all of the democracies that experienced civil war between 1960 and 1995 had majoritarian or presidential systems. None of them were based on proportional representation.

Proportional representation prevents the policy lurch we see under winner take all. When one party can govern alone with just 40 percent of the vote, policies swing wildly every few years. PR encourages cooperation and stability, not constant reversals.

Our political parties suck because we have only two. With MORE parties, they'd have to both compete with each other to win seats *and* cooperate with each other to pass laws.

the point of legislative supremacy is derived from a conception of self-government. what the founders missed is that the american people express themselves politically through *parties.* thus a legislature with proportional representation of parties best embodies that self-governance.

With proportional representation elections, every party gets seats in proportion to it’s share of the total votes.

Parliament ends up being a negotiation/collaboration among 4 or 5 parties — none powerful enough to act alone without consensus from at least some of the others.

Under first-past-the-post, governments can easily steamroll communities in safe opposition ridings without electoral backlash.

​Proportional representation changes this. Every vote impacts seat totals, requiring governments to care about all communities, not just swing seats.

I think ideally we'd have a system that allowed proportional representation. It exists in other governments and forces elected officials to form alliances and agreements with each other to get things done. The U.S. system is entirely adversarial and winner-takes-all. It sucks.
