SMT Energy Secures Significant Funding for Houston-Based Battery Project SMT Energy has secured US$135 million funding for its 320 MWh battery energy storage facility, SMTHouston IV, located in Houston, Texas. The project is expected to commence commercial operations in Q2 2026. The funding was arranged through a combination of US$100 million from Macquarie Group and KeyBanc Capital Markets, with the latter acting as financial advisor to SMT Energy on the deal. FlexGen Power Systems, a leading battery energy storage integrator, will supply the equipment for the project. The SMTHouston IV facility will connect to the ERCOT power grid, enabling it to participate in the wholesale market and supply energy and ancillary services to the grid. The project is critical to maintaining grid stability and reliability in the rapidly growing ERCOT system. By providing stored energy, the SMT Houston IV project is expected to support the ERCOT grid by powering the annual consumption of approximately 8,800 homes in Texas. This represents a significant milestone for the company, which has secured funding for 18 utility-scale battery energy storage assets with a total capacity of around 500 MWH. First Nations group Kino Aski and Marinvest Energy Canada are reviving plans to build a major LNG project in Quebec, Kino Aski announced on August 17. The project would see the development of an energy corridor to transport natural gas from western Canada to the Quebec port of Baie Comeau, where an LNG export terminal would be built. Under the plans for the project, the facility would have a production capacity of 15 mn tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG per year, which would be powered by renewable electricity. The Kino Aski First Nation would be majority owners of the project, while Marinvest Energy Canada would possess a minority stake. “Kino Aski LNG represents a unique opportunity to demonstrate that our communities can be leading economic partners while protecting our lands, our values, and our future,” Constant Awashish of Kino Aski said in a statement. The project remains in the development phase as negotiations are held with provincial and federal governments, local communities, and industry partners. The formal regulatory process has yet to begin and technical studies, environmental assessments, and consultations with rightsholders must be conducted. The gas will be moved to eastern Canada using both existing and by adding new pipeline infrastructure. Additionally, the LNG will be certified for low methane emissions, thereby meeting the European Union’s methane requirements. The announcement of the project also builds on Europe’s vow to explore opportunities to import LNG from Canada amid US President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs and annexing Greenland. The Quebec project first began gaining traction in February when the Montreal Economic Institute MEI released a report calling for the fast tracking of the project. The EU is in a race to secure more LNG suppliers as a ban on short-term supply contracts with Russia came into force in April while long-term LNG contracts with Moscow must fully terminate by January 1.
