I thought I’d use this photo of me yesterday talking Nature & Environmental Writing in one of my favourite places to say that there are still spots available on my online course at UAL starting Sept 30:

The final paragraph of Christopher Brown’s ‘A Natural History of Empty Lots’: “Things that can be explained by science, but also understood by poets”. More of this kind of thinking, please! Such a beautiful book.

As I send my next book off to my publishers with the usual anxieties and trepidations, it is very heartening to know one's words can give someone pleasure and food for thought.

What I’m reading:
Surrender by
@joannapocock.bsky.social

I’d like to say Joanna writes of the American West like Edward Abbey, Barry Lopez, John Graves & John Muir.

Yet that is an understatement.

Telling these stories from a woman’s perspective is a fresh take.

Buy the book!

And by coincidence my neighbour here, Adam Weymouth, is a friend. ‘Kings of the Yukon’ is brilliant as is his more recent ‘Lone Wolf’. Happy to be rubbing shoulders with him here at @waterstones.bsky.social Picadilly (2)

64 years ago this week, Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was released. I read the first page in high school & my view on what literature could do changed forever. This week I’m doing a deep dive to celebrate her. #environmentalwriting #climate #ecowriter

I loved this book. So much has been written about wolves in North America, but the packs that roam Central Europe were new to me. Adam Weymouth writes beautifully about these complex creatures & their relationship to humans. A wonderful read.

Wow. An update! “Travels with Charley” by John Steinbeck, “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac and “The Americans” by Robert Frank. Your book “Greyhound: A Memoir” is a must-read. BTW, ‘loved your photographs.

Stewart brings in several perspectives from human to more-than-human as an author who seems utterly at home as a shape shifter. I adored this book.
