Provenance can show a file’s declared history without proving the truth of every transformation. I’d pair authenticity metadata with known gaps and a correction path. Do the FADGI resources say how a later archivist should record uncertainty when the chain begins after creation?

FWIW the vibe at CHIPC was notable for FADGI talk being largely absent - very different from previous years; I think a huge shift in thinking is quietly happening now throughout institutions big and small, but will get louder. Glad to hear that conversation is happening openly at your institution!

FYI this was a topic of discussion at the CHIPC conference last week - alongside all the latest resource-hungry 3D scanning, multispectral, AI, etc. tech, naturally. I personally wonder about the decision decades ago to use TIFF for all images (16-bit for FADGI 4-star) whether it makes sense or not.

Sort of combining the FADGI approach with a museum photography approach to more comprehensively represent an object digitally. (But we do some things differently from museums too.) This is one recent example: exhibits.stanford.edu/exemplars/ca...

I don’t know her specifics other than that she’s a one-person shop as mentioned in the video. Her digitization setup appears to probably be FADGI 2- or 3-star compliant but the results (seen briefly in the video) are flat and pretty lifeless, as is typical because that’s what’s pushed.

Digitization can be so much more than that, but the digitization field is obsessed with FADGI compliance to the point that people don’t dare include extra images (like to show the object qualities of a rare book) because they can’t be FADGI compliant

Somewhat ironically, I think it was gatekeeping and condescension from the “pioneers” of digitization that got us to this point. Because e.g. FADGI, archivists et al. (i.e. not specifically digitization experts) are taught that digitization is a specific thing that primarily captures the content.

FADGI compliance is more than a checkbox—it’s the gold standard for ensuring your digital images are accurate, reliable, & future-ready. This means lower risks & peace of mind that your archives are secure & audit-ready. To learn more about DMI's FADGI scanning services, visit us at www.dmi-inc.com.

That explains your editing skills. I wish I had learned how to develop film. I only know about environmental controls for archival/museum storage and how to digitize to FADGI standards to create surrogates for long term preservation.

Thinking about what five accomplishments would look like in an archivist’s workweek and how Musk would not understand them.

1. Digitized photos to FADGI standards
3. Humidified and flattened rolled items
4. Arranged records
5. Described records
6. Created AIPs and DIPs of born digital records.
February 26, 2025 at 12:41 AM
And when you digitize items, you still need to preserve the digital files. It takes about 10 minutes per photograph to digitize to FADGI standards including cleaning, scanning with target, embedding metadata, and basic editing, to make TIFF preservation and service masters and JPEG access copies.
“Can’t you just digitise it all!” we’re asked. Sadly not my friend, because resources. #Decisions are made based on likely user-interest & fragility of material. Here's our digital collections site with c.15,000 images: archiveandlibrary.rcsed.ac.uk/special-coll... #EYADecisions #ExploreYourArchive
