Someone DM’d to ask me if I could upload Yamata no Orochi no Gyakushū, which is the Kaiju fan film Gainax made that’s on the rest of the Daicon III/IV laserdisc. I have been meaning to do that for a minute, I do still have the source file.

FFV1 has proven to be a very useful intermediate for processing & remuxing things. Kinda surprising how not too insane the data rates are.

I'll show a few more clips of the dot crawl mask debug (Its how I check its working right) - so you can see it in action - source is "The Circle" NTSC-J Laserdisc. FFV1 @ 444 and 16 bit

Here is S1 DS9 in motion, Still testing, had teething issues with the AI model Starlight mini and some FFV1 bother. But its been IVTC'd only - no pre work done yet, so no dot crawl removal, checkerboarding, gibbs ringing etc
No 'post' work either
Still gives you an idea of LD possibilities ... #DS9

occasionally I miss having an archives-focused twitter acct to do things like exclaim about the LoC finally accepting FFV1 MKV files as preferred for a/v preservation along with JPEG2000 MXF ... you guys don't have to care about this but I promise it's huge for me

What if video editing software just simply accepted every video codec instead of sending me on a wild goose chase trying to convert my FFV1 avi to something it actually likes.

And it's finished! It was a lot of effort, but every single .VID file has been decoded and re-encoded to FFV1 for long-term archiving! I documented the whole process + stored all code here: github.com/niemasd/VID1...

Our Library requested FFV1 b/c they wanted the "standard". It's not useful to them nor really better than ProRes 4:4:4:4

We're giving the library what it requested, but also a h.264 MP4 proxy. Our unit is keeping digital/analog source, ProRes MOV & mp4 proxy. Works for Mac environments.

I keep thinking a lot about how it would be very useful to have a lossless but very flexible video format for old school computer / video game capture that supported resolution changes and interlacing for demoscene production preservation and game captures. ZMBV / FFV1 are close but not quite there.

Yesterday, the Library of Congress upgraded FFV1 in a Matroska (.mkv) container to one of five “Preferred Formats” for the preservation and long-term access of video materials. This is good news for my institution, which possesses 120,000 FFV1 files in their Film and Video collections.
Embracing FFV1 in Matroska Container as a “Preferred Format” in the RFS | The Signal
The digital preservation landscape is ever-evolving, and the Library of Congress has recently made a significant update to its Recommended Formats Statement (RFS), to upgrade FFV1 (version 3) in Matro...
