Made it to #cleethorpes and after checking into my hotel my 1st port of call was the #beachhuts. Last saw these in 2002 and was very excited to find their essential #1950s styling still preserved. Love those steep diagonal railings, so #FestivalofBritain

The original Guinness Clock, which went mad with moving parts every 1/4 hour, was made for the 1951 Festival Gardens at Battersea. Travelling versions then toured resorts.
There'll be more #festivalofbritain / #seaside crossovers in my online talk - 13 May www.ticketsource.com/kathryn-ferry

It's 75 years since the #festivalofbritain so a great reason to discuss how it represented and influenced #seaside places in my next online talk on 13 May. These pics show the Seaside Section on the South Bank, in front of the Festival Hall. Tickets at www.ticketsource.com/kathryn-ferry

For the 1951 Festival Gardens at Battersea, Guinness commissioned the Lewitt-Him partnership to design a 25ft high clock. It was so popular that 8 travelling clocks were made which toured the country until 1966. Here they are at #GreatYarmouth #Torquay and #Morecambe.

From 1956 the architect for #Blackpool Pleasure Beach was Jack Ratcliff of Howard V Lobb & Partners. He'd worked at the #FestivalofBritain & designed the British Pavilion at Brussels Expo 1958 (below). At Blackpool he built the perspex Astrodome and the complex angled roof of the Derby Racer

Gloriously colourful, chock with wonderful personal stories. I can’t recommend this enough. It captures so well a time that is quite recent but nearly all gone. Loved it.

Here it is: the 1951 Festival Of Britain Celery Vase by Bagley I teased earlier. Putting 'Celery' on it meant it was tableware and therefore not subject to Purchase Tax :-) Naughty Bagley! #vase #celery #glass #bagley #glass #festivalofbritain #vintage #antique #collector #taxavoidance #taxevasion

Following @seasideferry.bsky.social 's talk on the influence of #FestivalofBritain on seaside architecture, I revisited Jean Symons' fascinating FESTIVAL HALL NOTEBOOK (2000). It records her time as an architecture student shadowing the clerk of works on the Festival Hall.

Last week's anniversary of the #FestivalOfBritain sent me to eBay and a set of gazetteers published at the time

This volume is about South Wales (whose definition appears to include Hereford, but never mind, 1951, you do you)

A quick thread which looks like it might be about the #FestivalOfBritain but maybe is really about the #Senedd elections ...
