Another great find from the sea

Heather and Liv from our maritime unit discovered this grindstone during a circle search near the 13th century Mortar Ship Wreck

Such stones were rotated to sharpen tools and are known from the 9th century

Could this be contemporary with the wreck?

Ornate Saxon copper disc brooch decorated with gold and garnets, AD 650-670.

It must have been a treasured possession!

From Floral Street, Covent Garden, once the heart of ‘Lundenwic’, the early Saxon town of London.

Sometimes you see an artefact where myth, magic & reality all seem to converge…
Behold, the Iron Age Torrs Pony Cap; pulled from a Scottish bog in the 19thC & dating to the 3rdC BC, the horns were still attached when found.

For this week's #FindsFriday here is a sherd of a ceramic vase from a villa in Roman Spain, decorated with a two-headed snake.

This iconography is associated with the god Sabazios, who was worshipped privately in domestic settings.

This silver penny of Edward I is an Irish issue dating to c.AD 1279 - 1302 from the mint of Waterford. Irish coins of this period are easily distinguished from English issues by the triangle on the obverse within which the kings bust sits. #FindsFriday finds.org.uk/pas/recorded...
