A little something I am toying with.
FADE IN: EXT. SUBURBAN APARTMENT COMPLEX - DAY A white animal control van idles by the curb. Exhaust fumes drift across wet asphalt. BARNABY, an eight-year-old German Shepherd, sits on the sidewalk. He wears a faded red nylon harness. Frayed white letters across the chest read: SERVICE ANIMAL. TWO MOVERS carry a taped mattress out of an open ground-floor doorway. AN ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER steps out of the van wearing heavy canvas gloves. He carries a catch-pole. The officer steps toward Barnaby, extending a gloved hand. Barnaby lunges. His teeth sink into the canvas wrist. He twists his body, wrenches the officer off balance, and bolts. Barnaby hits the five-foot chain-link boundary fence, scrambles over the top rail, and drops into the woods behind the property. EXT. TIMBERLINE - FENCE LINE - DUSK Barnaby thrashes through a thicket of blackberry brambles. The harness snags on a strand of rusted barbed wire. Barnaby strains forward. The wire digs into the red nylon. Barnaby drops his weight and heaves. The chest buckle snaps. The vest tears loose, caught on the barbs. Barnaby stumbles forward, naked, and keeps running into the deep pines. EXT. FOREST CLEARING - DAY (MONTHS LATER) A woodchuck feeds on dandelion greens near a rock pile. Barnaby crouches thirty feet away in dry brush. His ribs show through dull, dust-caked fur. Scars cross his muzzle. The woodchuck turns.

FADE IN: EXT. DULCIS SOMNIUM ACADEMY - COURTYARD - DAY The final precious minutes of freedom. The students hang around the grand courtyard enjoying recess. NIKKI (13, Vietnamese English) watches MAHREEN (13, Iranian English) using spray paint on the side of the main building. Purple hijab with yellow stars for Mahreen today! NIKKI You’ll get detention for this. MAHREEN All of history’s best artists had their critics. She places a cardboard stencil into position. Tapes it on. Sprays black paint over it. NIKKI What’re you painting anyway? MAHREEN It’s a surprise~! <K-POP> draws near. Nikki and Mahreen turn to the source. Two girls pass by, one in a wheelchair and one riding upon the back of the wheelchair. They <HUM> along to the music. ROWAN (13, Indian-English). Curly of hair and very curious of mind. Wheelchair or not, she’ll walk you like a dog in exams! HA-YUN (13, South Korean). Loud! Sporty! A football maniac! Thinks you can use the world cup for drinks. They both wave to Nikki and Mahreen as they pass, rounding the corner. Mahreen is all of a flutter. Nikki eyes her oddly. MAHREEN Awwww, wasn’t that lovely? NIKKI Honestly? I prefer organ music. MAHREEN No silly, I mean Rowan and Park! Isn’t it nice to have that special someone in your life? (teasy) You got eyes on anyone?

EXT. DRIVEWAY - NIGHT A sleek SPORTS CAR glides up a long, sweeping driveway that curves through an immaculately-manicured garden. It comes to a stop before an elegant, modern home. SELENE (30-ish) exits the car dressed in rumpled activewear. She carries a sports bag and her designer shoulder bag. INT. KITCHEN, ELEGANT MODERN HOME - SOON AFTER Selene strolls into the kitchen and stops short. Across the room, her husband OWEN (40s) is being tied to a chair by a scruffy BURGLAR (20s). Disguised by a balaclava, the Burglar is armed with a HAMMER. Owen has a dishcloth stuffed into his mouth. He is bloodied, bruised and terrified. Desperate, he moves his head, telling Selene to: run Selena stares in shock and ... drops the sports bag: THUD! The Burglar spins at the sound as she strides toward him: SELENE You’re early! The Burglar gawks at her, startled and confused. Before he can speak: SELENE I told Con to wait until I got home! What the fuck?! The Burglar tries to run his script: BURGLAR SHUT UP! INT. IRONTOWN STATION - ARRIVALS - ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING A broad corridor terminates in a tightly-closed airlock. There’s an up, a down - but they’re the breathy air-kiss of station spin - not Earth’s relentless bearhug. Hand rails run the corridor’s length. Thick padding covers what passes for a ceiling. No sense braining the newbies. MEDICS cluster by the airlock, crash carts prepped. Ready to go. Two PORTERS wait - empty body bags laid open on gurneys. And VELA (late teens - jumpsuit, spiky hair, nubby links protruding from sockets above her ears) - intent on that airlock as a cat at a mousehole. ATRIA (V.O.) You really think she’ll turn up? Straight into Vela’s head. Bone conduction for the win. VELA No harm looking. Vela glances at the medics - the porters - the body bags. ATRIA (V.O.) What’s with the body bags? VELA Hey! You wanna see through my eyes ask first! Seriously bitch! Anyways - you’ve seen the Redeye come in. Atria SNORTS (V.O.). ATRIA (V.O.) Nope. Newbies live a year we’ll talk. ‘Til then they’re walking corpses. Why get attached? Vela flinches. ATRIA (V.O.) I’m sorry. I didn’t mean - VELA - Yeah. Well. Awkward silence in Vela’s head.

It's a bit of a weird one.
EXT. BIG GRAVEL PIT - DAY Sloping with a wooden post part-way up. Rusty-brown smears trail down to a tarp slung over two lumps. One dog-sized. One goat-sized. This place isn’t strictly real. GOAT (a puppet of a billy goat - no doubt about the billy) is tethered to the wooden post. One foreleg flops useless, almost detached. Between gnawing at the tether... GOAT D’you think entrails taste like clothes lines? ‘Cos maybe I could - DOG (a wire-haired pointer puppet, not much more than a pup) looks up from her toy wishbone. She’s missing an eye. There’s a hint of nervous whine in her voice. DOG Did you eat her clothes line? Is that why she - GOAT - She doesn’t have one. Ontological crisis for Dog. She chews her wishbone toy. DOG Can you eat things that don’t exist? GOAT shrugs a complicated shrug. He’s a complicated goat. GOAT It’s hypothetical. See clothes line? Chew. It’s a goat thing. DOG What’s it taste like? Entrails? GOAT That’s what I asked. Goat looks sternly at Dog, who fawns. Huddles down. Whines quietly. She could pee herself. DOG I like entrails? But I don’t know what clothes lines taste like? Should I? Am I s’posed to? Yep. There we go. Pee streams down the slope.

PHILIP PEARLSTEIN’S STUDIO - 2018 - DAY SUPER: NEW YORK CITY 2018 An easel with an enormous oil painting of two nudes posed with a carousel giraffe and an inflatable dinosaur towers over OLD PHILIP (94), extremely short with bottle-thick glasses, who sits on a stool, prepping his palette. In front of him, two nude models pose as depicted in the painting. Opposite him sits his daughter JULIA (50s), arty glasses and clothes that would look hip if they were on anyone else. NOTE: Scenes in Pearlstein’s studio are shot documentary-style. Julia is off camera as she interviews Old Philip. OLD PHILIP Can I just say one thing to the audience before we begin? JULIA (O.C.) Okay. OLD PHILIP (into the camera) Prepare to be disappointed. He laughs. JULIA (O.C.) What? Why? OLD PHILIP (to camera) Because this film is going to be about me just as much as Andy. A young WOMAN sets up at the easel next to Philip’s. ANDY (18), skinny and awkward in hand-me-downs two sizes too big, looks around and zeroes in on Philip. He squeezes his easel between Philip and the Woman. She scowls at Andy and moves her easel. Andy coughs lightly to get Philip’s attention. Nothing. Coughs louder. COUGHS LOUDER. Philip looks up. ANDY (grins shyly) How does it feel to be famous? INT. PEARLSTEIN’S STUDIO - 2018 - DAY OLD PHILIP Those were the very first words Andy ever spoke to me. Which says a lot, given who he became. JULIA (O.C.) Why did Andy think you were famous? OLD PHILIP When I was a junior in high school, I swept the Scholastic Art Awards and my paintings were reproduced in Life magazine, which was the biggest thing around back then. I was the toast of Pittsburgh. That was 1941. Andy would have been all of 13. How he still remembered it was beyond me. So much had happened since then — World War II, for God’s sake. But Andy liked to know things about people, especially if they were people other people knew about.
