Under UV light, scorpions glow a vivid blue-green, and it's fluorescence, not bioluminiscence. Compounds in their cuticle turn invisible UV into visible light, even in fossils.

This #MicroscopyMonday shows a root nodule from an alfalfa plant. 🌿 The blue fluorescence labels the boundaries of the plant cells and the red fluorescence labels the bacteria that lives in symbiosis within the plant root. (Sankari Lab)

"Before his death, James composed a message that Professor Ryan Lister and James’s team plan to encode within an intron of a fluorescent reporter gene... Each time that chromosome produces fluorescence, the plant will quite literally have read out James’s message."
Brilliant 💚
I am deeply saddened by the news that James Lloyd has passed away far too soon. He was a wonderful colleague, person, and scientist. I will always remember him fondly.

Fluorescent Glow Reveals Hidden Glaze on Chauvet Cave’s Ancient Art | Sci.News
Some of the oldest drawings known to humanity, made roughly 37,000 years ago in France’s Chauvet Cave, are covered by a thin, translucent film of calcite that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Hi #chemsky! I am looking for books on fluorescence with an emphasis in porphyrinoids, or molecular photochemistry with an emphasis in photodynamic processes, singlet oxygen. Can anyone recommend somewhat recent books related to those topics?
Thank you very much!

I figured since I was already putting up black lights, and Bulk Barn had them on sale, I should do the thing. I don't think any kids noticed the fluorescence, but maybe it made them easier to find when they fumbled the catch from the candy chute.

Chauvet Cave’s charcoal horses may sit under a translucent calcite veil. A French team detected it with UV fluorescence from 2.5 m, and found an orange glow that might record hot charcoal. The varnish claim is still a hypothesis. #Chauvet #CaveArt #Archaeology www.anthropology.net/p/60-uv-spec...
