actually when you think about it, there's loads... from Freescape games to something as basic as Encounter...

I look at Commodore 64 "3D Construction kit" and "Driller", using the Freescape engine. The rendering uses a linear flipped buffer before converting to a VIC bitmap format.

The crackle of thunder and the clash of lightning above a haunted fortress... Dare You Challenge the Castle Master?

I have, many times, and it's one of my favourite games! Take a walk with me into its gameplay and a little about the Freescape engine that powers it.
Castle Master: An Eternity of Atmospheric Adventure
For the fifth installment of its FREESCAPE engines, Incentive Software turned to Gothic Fantasy… dare you read on?

I reached over to our C64 cubby and pulled out... DRILLER! One of the earlier solid 3D polygonal worlds pioneers and the first of the Freescape engine games.

This has the frame rate of a Freescape game on the ZX Spectrum #totp

I wrote a sweet little piece a while back about my history with the game here and the C64 and Amiga versions.

Con DRILLER y su tecnología Freescape por fin fuimos libres en un mundo completamente tridimensional.
Hoy recordamos el análisis de este mítico juego:

Hugely fond of "early 8-bit FPS a la FreeScape but more than 1fps"

Total Eclipse

Snakes... wait a minute... Pick up the battered hat of Indiana Jo- no, wait a mintue... Freescape takes centre #C64 stage and this one is an absolute charmer. Full of devious puzzles, loads of atmosphere and just - it's just really flippin' good. I am gonna get all up it.

Remember the Freescape games? I swear they sped along at about 1/2 a frame a second :D

That's too high a frame rate? What about a Freescape game on the C64?

Castle Master

"Freescape™️" games were a revelation BITD and they ran like absolute porridge on the #C64, but, despite this minor set back, they were usually always well received. CM is a decent adventure, allowing you to play from two protagonist angles... I played this a heck-a-lot.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a notable indie game that's gone for the Freescape Engine look

Driller

Ooooooh - Freescape! #C64 3D graphix never looked so good. Driller really is a decent game, particularly, if you have the patience to really get into it. It's a ponderously interesting adventure and well worth a look. Castle Master and Total Eclipse felt a bit slower. Play it.

Damn right! 😎👍🏻
#Freescape ftw 😍
Still wishing they'd open source the engine!
When I hear my kids moaning on about anything less than 60fps 😂

It's playing through ScummVM since it has support for the Freescape engine games and has additional options like higher resolution and smooth mouse control and such.

Driller was released as Space Station Oblivion in the US. It was created by Major Developments, and was the first game to use their Freescape 3D engine. A recent update of ScummVM added support for some versions of the game. 3/3

Time for more Atari ST action! Today we're looking at Total Eclipse, third of the games to use the pioneering "Freescape" 3D engine, and an adventure in which threats come in all shapes and sizes, including staircases. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS_H...

Nah, it's for everything now. Might & Magic, Crusader, Another World, Freescape 3D games, Russian Tetris clones, etc. They are reimplementing *a lot* of engines.

Rampart

Well, the earlier #C64 Domark deep-dive in the week flagged up a few gems and this was the other non-Freescape / non-TP related highly rated game. I just played it and it seems alright, but the timer is a real bore. Still, nice gameplay and a decent arcade-y strategy game.

Total Eclipse 🤔👍🏻
(Darkside or Driller! Basically any Freescape games 🤦🏻‍♂️😢)
I would like to know! 🤓👾

Memories of February 1990: The Freescape games never really grabbed my attention - until now. Up until Castle Master, the games’ plots weren’t too appealing to me, but wandering around a haunted castle? Now (1/4) #zxspectrum #retrogaming

I have been overcoming my childhood fear of the Freescape games by playing Driller and Dark Side (the primitive 3D graphics and sound were nightmare inducing!)
