#Freescape
@pasi I just looked back through this thread, and you’ve targeted a few game types I always thought would be well suited to the CPU and display of the S5, notably Elite, The Sentinel and Freescape style games.

I’d love to see The Sentinel, Driller or Total Eclipse running on a Psion as they […]

Damn right! 😎👍🏻
#Freescape ftw 😍
Still wishing they'd open source the engine!
When I hear my kids moaning on about anything less than 60fps 😂

That’s super cool! Didn’t even know the C64 was capable of that. Reminds me a bit of the Freescape 3D games on the Amiga, Total Eclipse etc.

Also love those eerie ambient sounds. I can someone writing a slow, unnerving horror game around that…

Nah, it's for everything now. Might & Magic, Crusader, Another World, Freescape 3D games, Russian Tetris clones, etc. They are reimplementing *a lot* of engines.

Incentive Software their company made the Freescape engine and pioneered some early 3D games. Starting with Driller in 87. This led into a bunch of 3d games culminating with Virtual Reality Studio better known as 3D Construction Kit

There was a remake by Ovine years ago but I thought it messed up the sense of scale and therefore atmosphere a bit. Driller and Freescape were also a likely influence on the indie game Kairo

The mentions of the Total Eclipse game the other day made me want to write a little bit about Driller. Driller was the first game to use the Freescape engine, an early first person 3D game engine with solid polygon graphics

Have you seen the Freescape games on the Spectrum Next? It makes them so much more playable when accelerated.

Well, the earlier #C64 Domark deep-dive in the week flagged up a few gems and this was the other non-Freescape / non-TP related highly rated game. I just played it and it seems alright, but the timer is a real bore. Still, nice gameplay and a decent arcade-y strategy game.

They might have published the later Freescape stuff now you mention it. Castle Master and the Construction Kit thingies.

Mostly I just think of Friday the 13th when Domark are mentioned then spend half an hour screaming for entirely the wrong reasons.

I've never heard of Eureka, but I know them for some pretty ropey games, but big 'uns, arcade ports. I'll have a delve. The published the Freescape games, didn't they? They were decent, but, when I am out of la jardin, I'll looksee. See. Si si.

That's too high a frame rate? What about a Freescape game on the C64?

Total Eclipse

Snakes... wait a minute... Pick up the battered hat of Indiana Jo- no, wait a mintue... Freescape takes centre #C64 stage and this one is an absolute charmer. Full of devious puzzles, loads of atmosphere and just - it's just really flippin' good. I am gonna get all up it.
