Fujiwhara?? When two hurricanes interact, they can sometimes pivot around one another. Next week there will likely be 2 tropical cyclones (perhaps 2 hurricanes) offshore. If they are strong enough, and are close enough, a #Fujiwhara may happen.

I was promised a Fujiwhara effect. Sad!

Thanks to #Humberto and the proximity of these two systems - just several hundred miles apart - #Imelda is being pulled out to sea by Humberto, avoiding landfall! #fujiwhara #hurricane

Dr. Sakuhei #Fujiwhara would be elated to see this 6-day forecast. When he wrote his paper on the process we now call the "Fujiwhara Effect" in 1921, numerical modeling and satellite imagery were still decades away. #Imelda #Humberto

Looking at the two disturbances in the western Atlantic (Invests #94L and #93L), there is plenty of model support showing some sort of interaction between the two in the coming week...

Hurricane forecasters watch for rare, chaotic Fujiwhara effect
The dance between developing storms in the Atlantic could soon evolve into one of meteorology's most unusual and rare events: The Fujiwhara effect.

There is considerable uncertainty re: Polo's ultimate trajectory, which will itself somewhat depend on how intense it becomes as well as a possible "Fujiwhara Effect" interaction w/*another* nearby hurricane next week. Indirect impacts to CA/SW US possible, but TBD, in 7+ days.

Bomb Cyclone Fujiwhara 🌀🌀

Yes, those are real words. Another area of low pressure is rapidly deepening off the Pacific coast, this time spinning around the first “bomb cyclone” to the north to eventually become the stronger system of the two.

Fujiwhara?

"In rare occasions, the effect is additive when the hurricanes come together, resulting in one larger storm instead of two smaller ones."

One of the best examples of a #Fujiwhara I’ve ever seen on today’s Canadian model!! Storms doing a 360 dance!🕺
Not to say it’s correct, but this is right out of a text book!

Well not only is TS Imelda going to move away from the U.S. (phew), it's doing so because of what is essentially a "flavor" of the Fujiwhara effect that has Imelda making a sharp right turn to follow in Hurricane Humberto's wake. 🧪

(I love hurricanes.)

Here's an interactive web simulation of the Fujiwhara effect, using @visualpde.com: lnkd.in/eaWCpKHF

When two areas of rotating fluid - like hurricanes in the atmosphere - get close enough, they can influence each other (the 'Fujiwhara effect'). Click to add your own vortices and see what they do.
