0.5% GDP by 2040: projected boost from post-Brexit trade deals.

4% GDP: OBR’s estimate of Brexit’s long-term cost.

6–8% GDP: research estimate of the UK’s shortfall by early 2025.

Brexit’s estimated GDP cost is 8–16 times the projected trade-deal gains.

that’s upwards of 20% of North Korean GDP
The binance hack is for more than $6 billion, people at TRM Labs and Chainalysis (big blockchain analysis companies) tell me. Far and away the biggest crypto theft in history. TRM saying it's North Korea. Others in the space who aren't saying that are also working w that assumption.

pretty good day for North Korean GDP
❗️A $2.77 billion outflow from Binance hot wallets was detected across five blockchains.

There is no official confirmation of the hack yet.

Ah, yet another dodgy journalist using real value over decades rather than percentage of GDP, despite the latter being the better measure of affordability.

The cost of the NHS has increased massively in real value since 1990, but as a percentage of GDP not so much.

this is roughly the GDP of Fiji
I want to point out: Excluding financial crimes like accounting fraud or systematic state/military efforts like the sacking of cities or expropriation, this appears to be the most valuable single theft in the entirety of world history. gizmodo.com/binance-inve...

FT journalist encounters economics for the first time, as he creates graph in £ rather than %GDP
Britain's welfare ratchet.

My column for @financialtimes.com. Political incentives, rising expectations on the state & deeper economic failings make the UK's benefits system hard to rein in.

want to show this graph as a % of GDP?

I still can’t get over this graph. Why would you not adjust for GDP unless the thing you were looking at was actual GDP growth. It’s bonkers.

AI-related investment categories have surged from around 4% of GDP to 5.5% of GDP. That's a huge impact on demand. But much of that impulse is leaking out via imports: when we strip those out, investment net of imports is *falling* versus GDP.

Illinois is not the laughing stock of the nation.

Illinois is doing way better than many Republican run states.
Illinois is #5 in GDP.

This really ought to be a % of GDP graph but it's worth noting that exponential growth in welfare state expenditures continued even as the economy stagnated.

Real GDP per capita has increased only slightly since 2008, and total real GDP is growing at a far slower rate than welfare expenditures.

Hi Tej. One question: is this intentionally misleading, or do you really not understand why it is unhelpful to chart absolute figures rather than as a percentage of GDP?

$6.3 billion is almost 25% of North Korea's GDP
The Binance hack is so gargantuan that it about doubled the previous sum of all known crypto thefts linked to North Korea. It's an absolute boon for Kim Jong Un's nuclear and ballistic missile weapons program. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/30/t...

FWIW, I don't think we're yet at "AI bubble pop," but we are seeing investment oversaturation and the first hints of "does this make sense?" Bubble keeps going because there's still ample belief that end-user spending on AI will go from 0.3-0.5% of US GDP to 2-3% of US GDP in the next year or two.
