It’s a stupendous Fossil Friday! Let’s celebrate with Stupendemys geographicus, the “stupendous turtle.” This reptile lived during the Late Miocene some 5 million years ago, and it’s one of the largest turtles to have ever existed.

There is a type of cone snail, Conus geographicus, that has weaponized insulin in addition to its cocktail of 200 different conotoxins.

One of those compounds is a pain-killer 10,000 times stronger than morphine.

Looking up at a fossil of a turtle that is hanging from the museum ceiling. “Stupendemys geographicus, the “stupendous turtle.” This reptile lived during the Late Miocene some 5 million years ago, and it’s one of the largest turtles to have ever existed. Scientists think this giant’s carapace could grow up to 7.9 ft (2.4 m) long and that it could weigh up to 2,524 lbs (1,145 kg). Stupendemys geographicus is a pleurodire, or side-necked turtle, closely related to the living Podocnemis genus. No skull of Stupendemys has ever been found. The sculpted skull used in this exhibit is based on that of another very large pleurodire thought to be related to Stupendemys.” American Museum of Natural History

A funky bug day around the Bay: first is Mogulones geographicus, a weevil found on Viper's Bugloss that has a restricted UK range ~ love the distinctive etched-patterning of this one. Also, a Tortoise Shieldbug species (either Eurygaster maura or E. testudinaria).

Stupendemys geographicus fue una tortuga gigante de agua dulce que vivió en el Mioceno en el norte de Sudamérica. Alcanzaba tres metros y más de una tonelada, y algunos machos tenían cuernos según fósiles descubiertos.

A couple of weevils seen on Viper's Bugloss in the Brecks yesterday. The first one confused me, as its a Marram Weevil, Philopedon plagiatum. However, looking at the distribution on the NBN Atlas it seems theres a strong inland population there. The second is Mogulones geographicus.
