Did anyone seriously think that the Army would have gone ahead with orders to attack the USSR? For chrissakes, the GIs would have shot the generals ordering it. They’d defeated Germany and Japan, they’d done the job, it was time to go home.

This probably the only other thing I really know Kunihiko Tanaka for besides Xenogears simply because gis artbook is littered with these things lol

Also, British civilians and soldiers would often come to blows with the GIs because they refused to allow segregation of troops in pubs etc.

The Metra map on the Illinois State Rail Plan website is one of the worst dynamic GIS maps I’ve ever seen wspengages.com/ILStateRailP...

I also really loved this visualization, very tufte-esque. most GIS analysis today is so sauceless in comparison

I think a lot of brits see something like american WW2 GIs being shocked that black and white brits drank in the same pub, then extrapolate from that that we are perfect tolerant angels who haven't done anything bad for the past 200 years
& finally, part of it is historic memory

american progressives know about jim crow—maybe not everything, but the idea that their country has done evil things isn't alien to them

brits i find have very little sense of what empire actually entailed, the see us as a fundamentally tolerant country

So dymaptic, my employer, was acquired this week by a larger consultation org that does civil engineering projects in addition to lidar/aerial photography and GIS. Not much changing day to day bc they want us for our expertise and to build the GIS department.

Me and why I'm willing to forgive ESRI for making ArcGIS Pro a windows-only program

at the same time as I'd like to gain more fluency in QGIS, the LibreOffice of GIS
As someone else in the thread noted, other versions of software can and often do get you 98% of the way there, in terms of features/interoperability, but it turns out that remaining 2% is often mission critical, and that's where Adobe/Microsoft, etc get you if you are a working professional.

In many cases the bridges were independently constructed over 60 years ago, before GIS (obviously).

17 October 1918. Rita Hayworth was born in Brooklyn, New York. She appeared in 61 films over a 37 year career and was one of the most glamorous screen idols of the 1940s becoming the top pin-up girl for American GIs during World War 2.

I've tried GIS. It's tricky. You're doing great though even if it feels like an uphill struggle. That's because you're improving all the time with out realising it. Keep going, you can do it!
