Last October, while traveling, we visited the London Aquarium, where we saw their resident bowmouth, Betty. I had never seen one before and I fell totally in love!
bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) The bowmouth guitarfish is a large demersal fish native to the warm waters of the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. These unique fish are unfortunately critically endangered, but they generally fare well in captivity and can be seen in aquariums around the world. In the bottom left of the page is a drawing of the whole bowmouth guitarfish. It is a deep brown-grey. The text to the left of the drawing reads as follows: Despite their elongated bodies, bowmouth guitarfish are rays. Adults may approach 9’ in length. They are armored dorsally with ridges of bony thorns over their eyes and along their backs, and dappled with lighter spots. Captured this image of a banded guitarfish back in 2018 in the Sea of Cortez. This trip was jam-packed with critters and I barely knew how to use my TG-5 to capture them. Might be time for a return trip.
