TRON is a fascinating test case for the cultural difference between the analogue and the digital (rather like the animations in the TV HHG2G). It is an entirely analogue attempt to represent the digital. The sequels are digital attempts to recreate an analogue attempt to represent the digital.
I think what's impressive about TRON is that, visually, it's still so much more interesting than any of it's sequels. It's crazy that they tried update this digital world by making it as 'realistically rendered' as possible. It's a complete misunderstanding of the original's charm.

a HHG2G branded towel made with a built in air-tag, so you always know where it is. You hoopty-frood.

“You think you’ve got problems? What are you supposed to do if you are a manically depressed robot? No, don’t try and answer that. I’m fifty thousand times more intelligent than you and even I don’t know the answer.” - Marvin, from HHG2G.
What if human-equivalent (or greater) artificial intelligence doesn’t save the world, or destroy the world, but a secret third thing.

I don't really remember differentiating between adult fiction and young adult fiction after I started reading fluently. I think I read HHG2G the same year I read Jurassic Park, and neither of those was the first grown-up book I read.

"Hotblack Desiato" is such a fucking good name, so seared into my brain it might be the only wrinkle on the whole thing; if you said to me 'think of a name,' I'm going to think 'Hotblack Desiato.' #hhg2g

Watching the original HHG2G

Ford orders 6 (maybe 8) pints and says keep the change... From a fiver, at which point the landlord thinks he's being worryingly generous.

If you haven't watched @greigarjohnson.bsky.social's latest video, you really should. It's a lovingly handmade tribute to HHG2G which is simply staggering in it's ambition. Also check out his making-of video, a lovely letter to handmade art and doing things for the enjoyment youtu.be/-431pDOiYRQ?...

I think, if Douglas Adams were alive today, he would update Earth from 'mostly harmless' to 'fucking dangerous'.

Yes to Minotaur, yes to Android and also he was Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard in HHG2G TV series, which brings us back to Slattibartfast

My favourite affectionate parody of this trope is still the Total Perspective Vortex from HHG2G.

A device that shows you with crystal clarity just how insignificant you are in the cosmic scheme of things. Utterly destroys people.

Like the Xitter-algo-assisted right-wingers who come to Bluesky. 😆
I think it was Cory Doctrow who pointed out that SF is a luddite genre in the original sense of the word: Not fearful of tech as such, but cautious and critical of how it's likely to be used.

How many SF novels are there (going back to Frankenstein) where the beautiful creation just goes amok?

Every day is a good day to talk about Douglas Adams. Everybody talks about HHG2G, but what really screwed with my head were Dirk Gently books.

You must have HHG2G in there somewhere!

Fool me twice, eh?

No, apparently audio f/x in radio drama before HHG2G was door slamming, footsteps and rain. They really took the idea of immersive audio-only production to an unprecedented level with it. But the fact that (like Shakespeare) the original story was a script with f/x shines thru.

Given the end of "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" - I'd like to think that the 42 in the pile of Scrabble tiles was put there intentionally. #hhg2g
