upper limit on the normal range. So often we see patients with #LongCOVID, #MECFS, chronic #lyme and other complex chronic illnesses presenting to the clinic with elevated IgG antibodies for herpesviruses (EBV, CMV, HHV6) and other pathogens (such as borrelia or bartonella).

such as EBV, HHV6, CMV, etc, lab testing companies have even developed "normal" titer ranges for IgG antibody levels for these pathogens, because since almost everyone has been exposed to these pathogens, almost everyone will have IgG antibodies for them. But, there is an

Reactivated EBV, HHV6, HAdV in Sputum from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients: Are autoAbs to IFN-I Impairing Antiviral Immunity? "An exhausted antiviral immune response is observed in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and long COVID. In this study, potential mechanisms behind this exhaustion were investigated. First, the viral load of EBV, HAdV, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human herpesvirus 6 (HHV6), and SARS-CoV-2 was determined in sputum samples (n=29) derived from ME/CFS patients (n=13), healthy controls (n=10), elderly healthy controls (n=4), and immunosuppressed controls (n=2). Secondly, autoAbs to type I interferon (IFN-I) in sputum were analyzed to possibly explain impaired viral immunity. We found that ME/CFS patients released EBV at a significantly higher level compared to controls (p=0.0256)."

A paediatric HSCT recipient with inherited ciHHV-6A developed severe complications and poor graft function. Molecular analysis supported viral reactivation, followed by clinical and haematological recovery after treatment.

IFN-I autoAbs cannot explain IFN-I dysfunction, with the possible exception of severe cases, also reported in severe SARS-CoV-2. We forward that additional mechanisms, such as the viral evasion of IFN-I effect via the degradation of IFN-receptors, may be present in ME/CFS, which demands further studies. Read more here>>

This hypothesis tracks with my experience as a hypermobile individual who had a mild head injury, multiple viral infections, re-infection of #EBV and #HHV6 with limbic encephalopathy leading to cascading connective tissue destabilization & #CCI.

The study enrolled 45 people with Long COVID, comparing them with matched controls. Participants self-collected saliva at specific time points over two days and completed detailed questionnaires. Further study of the viruses in saliva may help identify new subsets of people with Long COVID who could benefit from specific antiviral and immunomodulatory therapies, the PolyBio Research Foundation, which supported the study, shared in a press release.* Members of the Swedish advocacy group Svenska Covidföreningen (Swedish Covid Forum) recently published a resource, “Designing Studies for Patients with PEM,” or post-exertional malaise, to improve research methods into ME and Long COVID. “We have compiled best practices and recommendations for study design in this guide, specifically aimed at researchers,” the authors wrote. They state that patients must be involved in studies from early stages and that the risks associated with PEM must be described in the ethics application, among other recommendations. The University of California, San Francisco is actively recruiting for an observational study on myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) called Chronic Infections and Inflammation in ME/CFS (CHIIME). The study aims to enroll 200 people, comparing people with non-COVID ME, post-COVID ME, and healthy controls by performing “deep clinical phenotyping with high-quality biospecimen collection.” Participants will complete surveys, and undergo extensive testing and assessments. I fell ill with a bevy of ailments that are still being diagnosed two years later. Three rounds of viral encephalopathy from HHV6 and Epstein-Barr on top of EDS, MCAS, TCS, CCI, Chiari, and severe spine damage have been confirmed. At first it was implacable nausea, then chills, excruciating full body pain, biochemical confusion, terror, despair, rage, and seizures. I, someone who always did what needed doing next, became unable to walk. Once indulgently immersed in a jigsaw career of carnival, kitchen, welding, and mechanic work, I found myself with free time and no working hands. In between studying my own ailments, as doctors refused to, I wrote. As blindness set in I uploaded photos to remember what my life looked like. I prepared for this profile being my family’s last glimpse of a life full of art, antiques, trees, and years at sea. Scrolling for an anchor to appreciate life, I wrote poems of gratitude. To my surprise, people kept checking in even when I could no longer create visual art. At the worst of it, I could not answer anyone. A neurological inability to acknowledge sentiments that meant the most began. I could not speak yet wrote increasingly tongue-tying poems. Though I fashioned a cane out of a blowgun for proprioception and weight bearing, paralysis progressed until I had to be lifted to stand. People wrote notes of support and poems to me. Each comment arrived when needed. When I could no longer read, I made a final attempt to be admitted to a hospital and was denied. For the past six weeks I have been improving, though I remain in a medically fragile state. There are no specialists here, only outdated diagnostic machines and a crippled system unable to refer people out of state. Though grieved to leave my home state to pursue health care, in these remaining days I look at this view and find inspiration in each glance. The path I could only watch wildlife travel is now open to me again. Thank you all for walking with me when I could not stand!
