Our understanding of how the brain and AI (Artificial Intelligence) work has advanced considerably. The best model of the human brain we have today dates from the 1970s and is based on neural networks. For each characteristic, a knowledge or emotion is associated. We reconstruct concepts whenever we need them. Our memories are linked to each other by common characteristics. The brain reuses features. It does not re-record common elements. What we remember is a reconstruction. Eventually, the brain eliminates concepts that are not often called upon. This happens at night, during REM (rapid eye movement), when the eyes make rapid movements. For example, if you’ve been bitten by a dog, you’ll forget less and associate more dangerous characteristics with the dog. To see in front of us, the back of the eye is black. We have a black disc caused by the optic nerve at the back of each eye. We can’t see what’s in front of us without the brain, which reconstructs the visual environment from the periphery. We can deceive the eye with optical illusions. This new understanding makes it possible to treat post-traumatic disorders with EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). It reuses this phase of sleep to rebalance the neural network. For example, war veterans are taught that a loud noise is not necessarily associated with an explosive. In the early 2010s, scientists set out to model how the brain works. The Human Brain Project set out to create a program that would reproduce brain function on a computer. At first, this model couldn’t do much. Fei-fei Li, from Stanford University, observed that a baby doesn’t know much, but only learns after exposure to its environment. La compréhension du fonctionnement du cerveau et de l’IA (Intelligence Artificielle) a beaucoup évolué. Le meilleur modèle que nous ayons actuellement date des années 1970 et est basé sur des réseaux neuronaux. Pour chaque caractéristique, on associe une connaissance ou une émotion. On reconstruit les concepts à chaque fois qu’on en a besoin. Nos mémoires sont reliées les unes aux autres par des caractéristiques communes. Le cerveau réutilise les caractéristiques. Il ne réenregistre pas les éléments en commun. Ce dont on se souvient, c’est une reconstruction. Le cerveau finit par éliminer les concepts qui ne sont pas souvent sollicités. Cela se passe la nuit, c’est le REM (rapid eye movement) car pendant cette phase, les yeux font des mouvements rapides. Par exemple, si on a été mordu par un chien, on oubliera moins et on associera plus des caractéristiques dangereuses au chien. Pour y voir devant nous, le fond de l’oeil est noir. On a un disque noir causé par le nerf optique au fond chaque oeil. Nous ne sommes pas capables de voir ce qu’il y a devant nous sans le cerveau qui reconstruit le milieu de la vision à partir de la périphérie. On peut tromper l’oeil avec les illusions d’optique. Cette nouvelle compréhension permet de soigner les désordres post-traumatiques avec l’EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). Elle réutilise cette phase du sommeil pour rééquilibrer le réseau neuronal. Par exemple, les vétérans de guerre à qui on réapprend que un bruit fort n’est pas forcément associé à un explosif. Au début des années 2010, des scientifiques ont voulu modéliser ce fonctionnement du cerveau. Le Human Brain Project chercher à faire un programme qui reproduirait le fonctionnement du cerveau sur un ordinateur. Au début ce modèle ne savait pas faire grand chose.
