Easy to walk right past, candlesnuff fungus grows from rotting wood in clusters of dark, finger-like stalks tipped in white. Those pale ends are involved in spore production, while the fungus turns fallen wood back into forest soil.

It's a very soggy hot stick Saturday in Australia's South West. 🌧 This one's dripping bonnets. And could that be a bit of candlesnuff (Xylaria hypoxylon) there too? #hotsticksaturday #fungifriends #fungi #mushroom #mycology

For #fungifriday I offer this #fungus I encountered yesterday growing on/by a rotting log on the bank of North Capitol Lake in #batonrouge #louisiana. My app tells me it might be Xylaria hypoxylon, which is commonly known as Candlesnuff Fungus. There’s also a little #Mosstodon going on here…

Hypoxylon- now here’s an overlooked genus if ever there was one.
A fungal survey in northern Iran has revealed two new Hypoxylon species and four new country records, identified through molecular phylogenetic and morphological analysis.

An Oak Tree a Day
Visited an old friend. 20 years ago I isolated hypoxylon canker on this tree (it looks like little charcoal briquettes 😉) Just a reminder that you are stronger than you think. Bonus monarch caterpillar. California #nativePlants #nature

Nobody likes Hypoxylon fungi but I think they look kind of cool with all their little bumps and the patterns they form on wood.

Most recent few of the 72 fungi. I am less sure how accurate this category identification is. The app includes lichen here tho that is a hybrid organism that should probably be in Other. Fungi are ny favorite to find because they are more ephemeral than plants but easier to photo than animals.

A brand new one for me, I spotted this Cosmospora arxii, a red nectria, on Beech Woodwart, Hypoxylon fragiforme. Seen at #KinneilEstate 01/03/2026. @britmycolsoc.org.uk

It was so stressed from 5 years of extreme cold, extreme heat, drought, and ice storms, that it succumbed to hypoxylon canker. When the temperature rose above 85F, the fungus pads expanded and pushed the bark off the tree.

Still a lot of Xylaria hypoxylon about. You may know them as candlestick, candlesnuff or stag's horn fungus. But I found one group that had orange antler tips, and another group that was totally white and freakishly long.
