#ICanHazPDF
Also, #ICanHazPDF also works quite well.
Non-academics: if you see an interesting academic paper on here and you can’t access it due to a paywall just email the author and (depending on the state of their inbox 😜) they will generally be thrilled you are interested in their work and send you a copy.

Let's keep this going here BlueSky! #icanhazpdf can level the playing field for publication access
Way back in ye olden days, I was a part of Science Twitter. When someone wanted to read an academic paper and it was behind a paywall, I created #icanhazpdf which was a signal that someone needed a paper but didn’t have access, and then someone would see the hashtag and send it to them for free

I have a game. What were you "known" for on Twitter?

I'll go first. I'm the woman who caused Dave Ramsey to mass-block Royals Twitter.

Whoooo #icanhazpdf is back
If you need an academic paper that’s behind a pay wall, post the link to the paper, the title, and use #icanhazpdf and wait for someone to send it to you. Let’s see if we can get that going again here. ☺️

I can't tell you how sad it is to email a scholar for #ICanHazPDF and receive an auto-response indicating the Centre which employed the scholar closed in 2025 due "to an administrative decision ... I no longer work here." Yes, of course it's a humanities scholar.

The scientific integrity community has many members with no current academic affiliation, who hence make a lot of #ICanHazPDF requests.

Sympathetic institutions could make 1 or 2 fixed-term unremunerated positions available, just for the library access.

Can your university help? 🙏

(Please boost!)

If folks are not aware - this is not a joke! #ICanHazPDF is a thing. It's on Wikipedia so it must be true.

but we could create an #Icanhazpdf feed and people could just put their requests in there and librarians could subscribe to it.
One of my favorite parts of The Bad Place was the #icanhazpdf hashtag. It was like a bat signal to get access to PDFs from the authors or librarians.

Most academic librarians (who pay MILLIONS to these publishers for access to our own faculty output) are happy to help anyone out.
When you see a peer-reviewed scientific journal article, it often says “pay $35 to read this.”

Did you know that $0 of that goes to the authors of the article?

Just email us and we’ll be happy to send you a copy for free. We’re usually thrilled that anyone cares. 🧪🦑🦈

Does anyone have a copy of "Disgust in Early Christianity" by Andrew Crislip they could please share with me? Thank you! #icanhazpdf #academicsky

Also, Reddit has r/scholar where you can request articles and twitter used to have a hashtag #ICanHazPDF which functions similarly. Do we have anything like this in the skeets?
Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?”

Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay?

Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!

Oh, fun times. @science.org is blocking my institutional access. Anyone else having this issue, and have you found a solution?

Meanwhile if anyone wants to send me this PDF I'd be most grateful.

Always love sharing this, even as an ex-academic - if you ever come across a paywall for scientific articles, simply look the first or last author up and email them to ask for a copy of the article. They will almost always appreciate it and provide it completely free of charge. Or use #icanhazpdf
