In #Science #Immunology, researchers at @stanfordmedicine.bsky.social studied #IFNs in human #fetal #thymus development. They found type I & II IFNs play distinct but critical roles in cortical & medullary thymic #EpithelialCell differentiation!
Distinct type I and II interferon responses direct cortical and medullary thymic epithelial cell development
Single-cell transcriptomics identifies type I and II interferons as regulators of cortical and medullary thymic epithelial differentiation.

#InterferonFriendOrFoe?! Klein @kahlenberglab.bsky.social &co show Science Immunology that UV drives mitochondrial Z-DNA to induce type I & III IFNs in keratinocytes. IFN-I upregulates ZBP1 that binds Z-DNA activating cGAS-STING to boost IFNs, photosensitivity & inflammation in #Lupus skin!
Epidermal ZBP1 stabilizes mitochondrial Z-DNA to drive UV-induced IFN signaling in autoimmune photosensitivity

What I love about interferons is their simplicity ;-)
But seriously a great @cellcellpress.bsky.social new review of IFNs that are our 1st line of defense vs infections and have a critical role in many inflammatory an autoimmune diseases www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

Since @altssa.altgov.info asked nicely, here’s a an explainer that is hopefully useful.
Interferons (IFNs) are proteins made by our bodies. They are really helpful in fighting viruses, so viruses try to turn off their production.
This has the potential to be huge! RFKkr and Bhattacharya can eat dirt.

Increasing evidence that innate immune pattern recognition receptors do not sense productive infections.
DeRisi lab finds that RSV does not induce IFNs in productively infected cells. Only bystander/non-productively infected cells produce IFNs.

We often talk about IFNa and IFNb interchangeably as type I IFNs but it's becoming more and more clear that they're not at all interchangeable, and that they may even have opposing functions. IFNb seems to be surprisingly toleragenic in certain contexts. @lozanzi.bsky.social

But each cell has additional brakes. When immune cells get highly activated, they start making IL-10, a cytokine that reduces immune activity. When there is a lot of interferons (IFNs), this dampens response, again to protect you, but it risks secondary infections.

14/ Patients with AAN-I-IFN should not be given LAV, including YFV and CHIKV vaccines. People over 65 years of age should be screened for AA-IFN-I, as their prevalence is about 4% (doi.org/10.1126/scii...).
Autoantibodies neutralizing type I IFNs are present in ~4% of uninfected individuals over 70 years old and account for ~20% of COVID-19 deaths

Lies come so easy to some.
-I post science and even politics, nothing exclusive.
-I highlight science in context and meaning.
-I have not captured anyone.
-Immunesuppression is a thing, HIV, FKB506, CsA, steroids, etc. It should not ve confounded with immune feedback mechanisms, such as high IFNs
Well, there's this Dutch guy, who posts exclusively about evidence that suggests immune suppression isn't a thing; and he's captured a certain high profile opinion leader, whose assessments frequent the pages of the contemptible @nytimes.com...

👇🤷🏻‍♀️🥴

More severe symptoms = more SC2-specific antibodies. No difference for LC.
Any immune suppression/damage/dysregulation? No, all cytokine levels and cell numbers are comparable.

But, looking in more detail, some modest alterations can be seen. You would expect some, considering some report LC.
