This is a particularly interesting thread to pull on re. inheritocracy actually, as making people less able to leave their spouses.

In divorce - all assets are up for grabs, and court splits on the basis of need. But this doesn't account for inheritocracy...
Worth mentioning - when we're talking about "bank of mum and dad" we're not just talking about a vector of intergenerational transfer of wealth (and control) but often a vector for marital abuse around control of finances and access to safety.

These ghouls always pretend that they would support higher taxes on the wealthy if they were structured slightly differently.

The rich get richer: Australia is at risk of becoming an inheritocracy

There is a record number of billionaires in Australia … now home to 161 billionaires, up 11 from last year

In 1984 that list had just two people with the equivalent wealth of $1 billion in today’s money

As someone whose most reliable safety net has been the squatting scene and who regularly sends money to my parents rather than receiving it, I deeply identify with the resentment towards inheritocracy expressed in this text. Especially the kind of inheritocracy you see around the left milieu.
A very important read and it's desperately annoying that it's a taboo even in most parts of the left!
For all abstract definitions of "class" it's clearly the case that it's essentially inheritance and / or easy access to capital.
Once defined can be reformed!

As many countries see the rise of a new "inheritocracy," estate, inheritance, and gift (EIG) taxes are declining. But there's a lot of variation across countries' EIG tax. Learn how to visualize data on the GC Wealth Project site (@stone-lis@bsky.social)
