Why The Economist hates wealth taxes.

July was a month where I didn’t read (or at least didn’t finish) a lot of books. Only one non-audiobook. I’m still ‘behind’ my random target now at the end of September.

The one word missing from the story about half of young people being behind on at least one bill is inheritocracy: in the UK, a comfortable life increasingly depends on how much support your family can provide.

For many people, wealth is built through inheritance rather than income.

Yep. Although there's a review of an interesting study on inherited wealth in the Economist. (Gift link).

Prof Gallow is rich. His position on wealth taxes is self-serving. Gary does an excellent job of pointing this out. If we don't tax wealth, it will always grow faster than the economy, and so inequality will always grow. Badly designed wealth taxes are an argument for Well designed wealth taxes.

Irish media still not getting it right on this & 5.6% growth is still too high. Hey @irishtimes.com, @news.rte.ie, @independent.ie, big house price growth impoverishes younger generations & moves us towards an inheritocracy like Game of Thrones. #ireland #neoliberalism

Extremely interesting! I think this is well aligned with Andreas Cervenka's "Girig Sverige" (which recently became a hit in Sweden), as well as with Eliza Filby's "Inheritocracy". Assets are very easy to pass on from one generation to the next, which creates its own problems.
