Over 10,000 years ago, indigenous communities spread the Four Corners potato (Solanum jamesii) across the American Southwest - greatly expanding its geographic distribution. To this day, these tiny tubers are still used for food and ceremonial practices! 🧪

An exquisite endpoint: the solitary spike of Carex jamesii, just a few (2 or 3, sometimes 4) conical-beaked perigynia huddled around the staminate fls (here still bearing anthers), all cradled by the leaves-qua-bracts-and-scales that subtend the entire infl, then each perigynium. Maple Grove today.

I couldn’t place these black dots on smooth hazel bark - microscopically, the spore size and shape looked a lot like the description of Swinscowia jamesii, which would be a good record. I’ll hang on to the specimen for confirmation early next yr I hope.
