The tradition of presenting the emperor with sweets for the 'Kashō Celebrations' (嘉祥の祝) was still alive in the Muromachi period.

In the 'Oyudono-no-ue-no-nikki' (御湯殿上日記), a diary kept by the ladies of court, these sweets were known as 'katsū'/'kazū' (かつう/かずう).

When the blooms have died the leaves are cut and gathered into bundles, distributed for use in 'shōbu-yu' (菖蒲湯).

It is custom to take sweet-flag (iris leaf) baths for the 5th day of the 5th month celebrations (now known as "Kodomo-no-hi こどもの日 or "Children's Day").

Arriving at the end of Golden Week, 'Kodomo-no-hi' (こどもの日 "Children's Day") celebrates the happiness of children and families.

In the weeks leading up to May 5th many homes display dolls and armor (or helmets), symbolizing vitality and strength.
