From today, people with legitimate interest should be able to find out the beneficial owners of companies and trusts from any EU member state, according to the deadline set out in the Sixth Anti-Money Laundering Directive.

Based on my research, only 7 countries currently offer access...

The EDPB clarified that LI should not be used only as a last resort, and controllers cannot retroactively change the legal basis. Some controllers tried switching to legitimate interest after their original basis was rejected, as seen in EDPBI:EE:OSS:D:2025:1791. www.edpb.europa.eu/system/files...
