“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

Imagine coming home from school or work, and loudest sound was the sound of birds, getting ready to roost for the night.

Stel je voor dat je thuiskomt van school of werk, en het luidste geluid was het geluid van vogels die zich klaarmaakten om te slapen voor de nacht.

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes.

This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com
Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

"Surface parking generally costs $5,000 to $10,000 per spot, with underground/structured parking costing five to 10 times more than that. By comparison, installing good bike parking costs about $100 per bike depending on the type of rack used."

People Who Bike Are Subsidizing, Not Shirking, Street Costs
The recently promoted misconception that cyclists don’t pay their fair share for street infrastructure is both false and misleading.

Dreamy #lesscar life
No car? No worries!

IKEA Utrecht rents (covered) cargo bikes, bike trailers, and trolleys to easily transport (large) purchases home.

Because most of the times, you don't need a car to get your favourite products at home!

Even though nobody wears bike helmets in the Netherlands, the fatality rate there is significantly smaller than that of the United States. What have they figured out that we haven't?
How I Learned to Cycle Like a Dutchman
In the bike-friendly Netherlands, cyclists speed down the road without fearing cars. For an American, the prospect is thrilling—and terrifying.

Germany’s cargo bike boom is no accident 🇩🇪

Sales jumped from 34k in 2016 to 210k in 2024, even as the wider bike market cooled. Backed by smart subsidies and big fleet rollouts, cargo bikes are replacing vans and cars at scale.

Too sweaty. Too hard. Too weird.

And then they tried it. They made the space.

What is Emmanuel Grégoire, the new Paris mayor, planning for the city over his new term in office?

—60,000 new social housing units
—15 express bus routes
—Completion of city's full bike network
—Transformation of ring highway into a boulevard
—1000 new pedestrian streets
—300 new hectares of parks

#London A city with leadership that is becoming an example (like Paris / Mayor Hidalgo). Even if your city’s specifics aren’t similar, just watch how the leaders lead, how they take a community engagement path, how they build resilient trust in the #lesscar transition. #ClimateInfluence
Today we saw Oxford Street transformed: car-free, world-class, accessible and clean.

After a protected bike lane is installed, fewer people are killed and injured while biking, walking, and driving. In New York City, we've seen that traffic deaths and serious injuries decline by:

18% for everyone
29% for pedestrians
39% for senior pedestrians

The #ClimateInfluence of what Paris /Mayor Hidalgo have been able to do in the #lesscar #transportation direction is massive. U.S. mayors /city council leaders should take note and get bolder. We CAN shift the #leadership social norm, one bike lane or transit funding project at a time. #NameAndFame

Behavior and lifestyle changes are triggered by this $4 mark. I am so curious to see how bike / ebike uptake shifts too. Especially in urban areas entering warmer months. I remember it felt like an overnight shift to ebikes and bluer sky in Seattle that first COVID summer. The #lesscar joy wins.
