Wetenschappelijke naam: Limoniidae indet.

A few pics of cranefly male terminalia from Ben Lawers last summer. Part of an occasional effort to produce decent images for these as I often find the line drawings in the book difficult to interpret.

Day 18 of #InsectAdvent - LET IT SNOW

Chionea (Limoniidae) are a genus of wingless craneflies commonly called Snow flies (not found in UK but 'strongly suspected' that they are here...). Adults can be seen scuttling across the snow in the winter

Contrary to what some of you may think, these are not mosquitoes 🙅‍♀🦟. With about 11,000 species described, the Limoniidae family is the most diverse family in Diptera and is as diverse as birds!

Some other beauties from today, from four different orders.

How many are interested in craneflies, hands up?
No?
A fascinating group, comprising of several hundred species, with interesting biology.
Here is one of the most common one, short-palped cranefly, Limonia nubeculosa.

Schneemücken (Chionea sp.) sind winteraktiv & besitzen stark reduzierte Flügel. Das Exemplar habe ich 2006 Mitte November gefunden. Gut erkennbar sind die fliegentypischen Schwingkölbchen (Halteren).

Some crane flies in the genus #Geranomyia produce a little gel nursery to develop on leaves in the tropics. There they graze on algae & other organic matter. The mass provides moisture (other spp. live in water/soil) & likely protects from predators.

Klopt!
