he starts the book off by basically comparing himself to SEALs and Green Berets, and even makes mention later on about how he tried to join MACVSOG, but while you get a few glimpses into operations while at the battalion/company level, the Vietnamese he's advising are virtually non-existent! ...

Zeta Gundam being in 1985 postdates the Phoenix Program "counterinsurgency" in Vietnam; I personally suspect Tomino drew some inspiration for the Titans from MACVSOG et al
