Hugh MacDiarmid was wrong to say that everything bad in Scotland stemmed from the Reformation. But in another sense he actually was very much correct
Remains a demented choice. We could have had bùlangeraichean serving baguettes with square sausage. But no. You wanted to be Protestant.

“Hugh MacDiarmid” wasn’t really called Hugh MacDiarmid, and his version of Scots wasn’t something anyone spoke — but he made mysterious modernist poetry out of old dictionaries. I wrote about his famous poem “The Watergaw”, and how one phrase in it seems to have been obscure even to the poet himself

the current NZ govt is so anti-science that they've changed eligibility for the Prime Minister's Science Prizes to rule out awards to people doing basic science

eg from 2026 the MacDiarmid is for work with "potential to generate econ, health, social, or env benefits for New Zealand"

Let us lament together—the broken mirror
And you found naked in your hiding place.
