We are proud to announce that in collaboration with our brilliant volunteers, we are releasing a fascinating series of spooky informational graphics focused on Creatures of the Deep. Today’s graphic focuses on Anglerfish, broadly speaking. We thank volunteer Micah for assisting in designing & researching the text for today’s card! Deep-Sea Anglerfish belong to the frightening Lophiiformes order. They live in the midnight zone, so they are acclimated to face any difficulties in this harsh zone! Their color is perfect for blending in with the pitch-black environment. Infamously, they use bioluminescence to take advantage of the dark to attract prey. But what people often don't know is that the relationship between male and female deep-sea anglerfish is as strange as it gets! The males are technically parasitic, relying completely on the females for survival. They are much smaller than the females, and do not have the iconic glowing lure to entice their prey. The male will search through deep water for a female before attaching with sharp, hook-like teeth. After this, they stay for life, gradually fusing with the females over time. He fuses almost like Cell in Dragon Ball Z! This is called sexual parasitism. But since the male fertilizes the female's eggs, the relationship is sometimes called mutualism instead of parasitism. The male, in essence, becomes a part of the female, losing his sight and sucking nutrition from the female for the rest of his life. Recently, a female was found with eight males on her, so not only are these fish frightening to look at, their reproduction is just as spooky!

Today’s graphic focuses on Oarfish. The oarfish has mythical and superstitious lore behind it, which makes its horrifying appearance not the only thing that makes it so striking! The oarfish (Regalecidae) is proof that aliens do exist on Earth! Individuals can reach a staggering 26 feet (with unconfirmed reports up to 56 feet) in length, which is roughly the length of a stretch limo. Similar to other spooky sea creatures, the oarfish feeds and lives in the mesopelagic zone, also known as the twilight zone. The oarfish floats up and down and uses its ribbon-like appearance to slip in and out secretly while swimming to capture prey. Due to living so far away from the shore, the oarfish is notoriously difficult to observe and study, and scientists are still answering questions about them. Alongside their oar-like appearance, which is believed to give them their name, they are also called the doomsday fish! Similar to how ravens are sometimes seen as an augury, historically, if oarfish were spotted, legend has it, natural disasters and cursed events were sure to follow. Despite having a reputation as a harbinger of doom, the oarfish is one of the coolest fish in the ocean and is a prime example of deep-sea gigantism. Instead of thinking that you stumbled upon a cursed fish, be fascinated by this freak of nature!

Entre autres, je suis captivé par cette installation de Korakrit Arunanondchai, fait avec des objets récyclés. J’aime particulièrement le visage.

We are proud to announce that in collaboration with our brilliant volunteers, we are releasing a fascinating series of spooky informational graphics focused on Creatures of the Deep.  Goblin sharks (Mitsukurina owstoni) are one of the strangest and fiercest-looking animals in the sea. They live at the bottom of the ocean, and have adapted captivating attributes to live in some of the Earth's harshest conditions. Despite their grayish appearance in the famous photos, they are actually pink, and at their peak can grow over twice the length of the human male! They can reach a staggering 15 feet and over 460 pounds—the size of an adult gorilla! Due to the rarity of seeing goblin sharks, there is so much more to learn about these fascinating creatures. On their long snouts are special organs called ampullae of lorenzini that, similar to the electric eel, help them sense and detect electric fields around them. Finally, its jaw can actually be extended to the length of its snout to help surprise prey, ensnaring them before they can even react. Imagine being the first scientist or sailor to pull this fellow out of the sea!

Today’s graphic focuses on the mortifying Frilled Shark! The Frilled Shark looks straight out of a Lovecraft story! With razor-sharp teeth, dark eyes, and a snake-like appearance, the Frilled Shark is rather menacing. The Frilled Shark, (Chlamydoselachus anguineus), is actually one of the most ancient species of sharks in existence. This species is at least eighty million years old. It is part of a group of special animals called “living fossils,” which means their anatomy, & general characteristics have changed very little from when they first appeared.  The Frilled Shark can grow up to six and a half feet, taller than the average human male! The “frilled” name comes from their rippled skin, not their frightening teeth. These amazing creatures feed on squid, using their sharp teeth to viciously grab onto prey and to stick to them like glue. Lastly, like snakes, they can eat prey that are bigger than themselves! What other amazing living fossils are out there in the oceans that we have not encountered yet?
